   Age of a disk shouldn't have anything to do with reformatting. You'll have to give a little more detail than that. Are you talking Windows 95/98, ME, 2000, XP? What is the exact error you're getting? Is it saying the disk is too small for the operating system? Or is the rest of your computer not meeting the specs for install?
