Hi! I am using 7Zip and special batch files on a Win98 computer to compress files on my hard drive and am having an issue: when I re-compress some files, 7Zip breaks with an error. I forgot what the error is, but .Zip files work properly, and I think the error is due to a memory issue. According to the docs., I can disable multi-threaded mode to save 32MB or 64MB of RAM. What else can I do to save memory? I want .7z format and the LZMA2 technique, as it gives the best compression ratio. :)

I tried the link. When I try to download a file, I get an ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT error. :( I'm going to try Google now.

    BTW, I think I have a 9.xx beta, but I'm not sure.

I found and downloaded the file. I'm now going to test it. :)

I checked. I have v. 9.20. What will happen if I install v. 4.65 on top of it? Will LZMA2 still work? Or should I try a later beta?

I installed the older version. I still get an error message. It's a Fatal Exception 0E in MAGNARAM. I like 7Zip and use it a lot. I especially like the ease-of-use and compression ratio. I want it to work on my Win98 system. :/

Version 4.65 is the last version for Windows 98.
If you don't have it, you can download the command line version from here.
    https://sourceforge.net/projects/sevenzip/files/7-Zip/4.65/

    Two issues:
    It supports LZMA, not LZMA2.
It only supports compression of LZMA, not decompression.

Before I installed the old version of 7Zip on my system, I backed up my version of 7Zip, but I'm afraid I backed up the wrong version, for the installer had me marked in a different folder. I need LZMA2, as I already compressed some files using the technique. :( I think I still have the beta version somewhere, though. :)

I guess I'm forced to use the buggy beta then. :( To get around the bug, is there any other command-line utility to compress and decompress almost as good as 7Zip? Or can I get around the bug I'm experiencing? BTW, Zip files seem to compress and decompress properly. I want the compression ratio, though. :(
