I don't know what "exple" is but there are viruses/trojans that cause problems with Task Manager, msconfig, regedit. What OS? What were you fixing prior to this happening?

Yes, ran everything. Sorry I was so vague in my post but I was beat. It is a p2.0 533 fsb

    Has XP SP2
When I removed quite a bit of the spyware listed on the HJT directions and rebooted the machine came up and all I have is the background, luckly I can still get in via safemode. Suggestions? Any other information I can provide?

Please tell us exactly what you remove (fixed) using HijackThis. If you had it installed properly, everything will be in the backups folder and you can look at the backups click Config and then Backups.

Do you want me to list (type out) the full string for each?
Based on assumption, I am thinking that mad.dll is the one I removed that is giving me issues. Since I can not get a task bar or icons or basicly anything else to work. The pop-ups are helping me. LOL They are popping up and I can explore using the popups. So right now I am on the bad machine.

You can just bring up the backup file in notepad and cut and paste it here.

Chas, I really appreciate all your help, since the person was so impatient about it getting fixed, I put in a new HD and did a fresh install, copied over all the important stuff for them and they can reload the apps. Prior to all that I went through the list of protecting yourself and installed what it said to do. Avast seems to take up quite a bit of proccessor? Well, thank you for everything. I do have the bad HD with the crap on it, I may takle that at a later time. It would be as a learning experience though. Thanks again!!!! I know I will have more problems, it was my bad for not coming to you sooner. I learned my lesson for this week. -Shaun

damn, just saw this thread. Was going to say if he/she had any HP printer monitor software that started up with the system to make sure it was disabled . I had a few SP2 installs that I had to do that to. Once XP SP2 booted sucessfully, there was no more issue with the HP software.

Replacing MS Java is very important. It has too many security holes in it. That's why MS stopped supporting it. You need to replace it with Sun Java A.S.A.P.
