9 GB .wmv file transfer to usb hdd

I am trying to transfer a 9 GB .wmv file from my desktop to my lacie 500 GB hdd. When I try it says i do not have enough room HOWEVER I have something like 400 plus GB of free space on the HDD.

Anyone else ran into this problem?

 

Have a look to see how much space left on hard drive you are transferring from.
You may need to transfer smaller stuff first, if very full.

I have something like 30 GB free. That should be enough no?

 

I am not absolutely certain, But, I think you have the same problem when transferring a large file/files as you do when burning to dvd. It uses 2 to 3 times the space on the hard drive to store the copy, before transferring/burning - perhaps someone else knows better.
I used to keep down to 2gb, as XP sort of creates above that when burning.
It might also be the software , if you are using anything else to copy.

 

Can you not use a tool to split wmv file into sectors to copy, and stitch back together,once copied?
I gather it takes 4gb of hard drive space to copy a 2 hour dvd.

 

Think about defrag, - you need 15% to 20% FREE TO PROPERLY DEFRAG.
So if you have a 120 gb hard drive, it would be o.k,(25%) but if you had a 300gb hard drive, you would struggle, as 30gb is only 10%.
I would logically use that arguement with copying data, (as with burning to dvd) without further knowledge of your system, and hardware.
