OK, i have a laptop with 192MB RAM...and was wondering if i should run 98, 2000, or XP (i know the sys req. of each, but wanted some first hand exprience, since i've never run XP with less than 256MB. Would XP be too slow, 98...doesn't have a very good compatibility because you always need to load drivers, and 2000...this is the turning one, would this be the best inbetween?

I've used windows 2000 on a few machines and it is still a good operating system. Not all the bells and whistles of xp, but you still get good support from it from M$. If a RAM upgrade is in your future, then I'd consider getting XP. If no RAM upgrade, stick with windows 2000.

How about some spec's on that Laptop???
Brand & model, cpu/chipset/what kind of ram?
Would help figure the best option for you.

Most likely windows 2000 the best option, use NTFS file systen, it wont boot very fast but is good stable OS even with less ram. (Ive seen W2K run on as little as 32mb of ram)

Windows 98, No I wouldnt, Stoneage, besides no security!
Microsoft does still support 98 at least you can get all the updates form microsoft.

Xp would possibly run just fine, it is the best Microsoft OS, even on 192 mb of ram.
I had an older Dell laptop with 128mb pc100 ram that I run XP on, but I had to update the bios before I could run XP, wasnt too bad but I did add another 128mb big improvement, I have sinse sold it.

My first choice would be xp, given that the OS is more secure and use friendly than the rest. Running xp on 256mb of ram shouldn't have any problem on your system, fyi i'm having dualboot between xp and FC3 on my system and it run perfectly well but on the other hand it also depends on how many program u install and what you're doing with your pc, if u game alot or did alot of video editing stuff, then for sure u have to get more ram. Since nowsaday the price for ram is dropping, i guess there's no harm adding 1 or 2 piece as it would only benefit your system.

    Hope the above helps! ;)
