Right now, I am still struggling to get 98 loaded onto my computer. I have been using 98 with the SE upgrade for 5 years now. I mostly surf the web, keep my financial records, emails, word processing, and my photos on the computer. Is it worth upgrading to XP or ME at this point? Brat boy uses his for gaming.

I have heard several people with ME wish they could go back to 98 but I haven't heard many opinions on XP vs 98.

And should I get lunch at BK or Hardees?

Add memory to that box and it will be good for W XP.W XP likes 256M+ memory,
ca 512MB is optimal for good user experience.

    Win Me is bad thing™

WinME is horrible and is easily the worst OS ever created by M$. If you're looking for a rock solid OS try Win2k Pro. As the other poster noted you will want to add some RAM, regardless of which OS you go with.

I've finally gotten Win98SE to load so that is good. At least it will be when I get the sound to work.

Anyway, I have been looking lots of places for WinXP. eBay has it for $89 + $10 s&h. It comes with an IDE cable and/or a mouse. I also found it several places for the same price or within a couple of $$ bundled with some cheap piece of hardware like that same mouse or cable. I also found it for $199 without the cheap hardware. Is that a deal or what? For half the price you also get a mouse? Are we stupid or what?

And a 'family license' so I can legally put it on both computers is an additional $55. And they wonder why we do it 'illegally'! What a ripoff.

I would like to update but I think I will save my $$ right now and just have a sandwich. All that surfing has made me hungry.

The cheap ones say they are full but I am leary of them. As you mentioned, an upgrade won't do me any good at all.

It'll just have to go on my 'aniversary/birthday/Christmas/darn, I'm good' list. Unless I can split the full version with family license price with my sister. She wishes she had it instead of ME.

The WinXP upgrade cd IS the full version. the only difference is that you
    1. have a previous OS installed currently on the machine
    or
    2. have the previous OS's CD available so that the install can scan it and verify that you qualify for the upgrade.

that's all the upgrade cd does. It verifies that you owned a previous windows OS and are eligible for the upgrade. :D

I presume this means a Windows OS of some sort since even DOS comes on most computers nowadays. I will see if baby sis wants to split the cost of XP and a family license with me this spring.

BTW, I"M TYPING THIS ON MY OWN COMPUTER!!!!!!!!!! brat boy's is sitting idle at the moment. woo hoo!!!

DOS won't cut it as an eligible upgrade.. only Windows family Operating systems.

I would use expression unawere of OEM laws. ;)

    OEM(original equipment manufacturer) gets
windows installation media with ca 1/3 of the
retail price. It is meant for preinstall to
newly assembled personal computing device ,
wich then is sold to customer.
It is illegal to sell only OEM installation media,it must allways be sold with computing device
And mouse as per se is a computing device ;)

I love my xp pro, but what is a family plan or what, I never heard of it. Hell If I could get lisence to put xp pro on 2 or more computers for an extra 55 bucks I'd do it. better then full price.

A family license? I don't know about one for XP Pro. The $55 is for the home version. It is just a key code that allows you to put the OS on all the computers in your house instead of having to buy a new copy for each one. You still have to buy XP separately. It's just one more way for MS to get your money.

I did get WinMX downloaded yesterday. You never know what I might find to download with it. ;)

sorry as. jus trying to say that non-legal XP isnt a good thing.

I have XP Home on this nu PC and the only difference i can see is that i cant use management console to do the users thing (is there a way around it?) and i cant get into IIS either. which is a bit of a shame since i write ASP for IIS.

Right, theres a count for the post. :)

I upgraded from 98 to XP and it's the best thing that ever happened to my computer!! Excellent and easy once you get used to the new symbols. Or you can convert it to classic symbols.

Don't know why anybody with an existing OS would pay the price for a full version. Doesn't make much sense to me. If they have nothing better to do with their money, they could send it this way!! Ha ha.
