I aquired an older notebook with 98se and am having trouble with a USB
    flashdrive being reconized.

I tried downloading a PNY Flashdriver driver and am having trouble.

Is it possible to download your 98se patch software on another machine hooked to the internet and load to a CD and load to my notebook.

    Welcome to MG. :)

What sort of PNY flash drive is it exactly?

And did you read this ?

If you can't find a driver specific for your flash drive you may find that an XP driver will work.

Yargwel's link above has several different w98se drivers for several different PNY USB drives. They also state that as of 2006, they have stopped supporting w98se. The last driver in the list may work if the PC has USB 2.0. But the first thing I'd do is download the newest chipset software you can find for the PC. Reboot, then try the appropriate driver from the PNY site. If you can post the make and model of the PC and/or motherboard, we may be able to find a work-around for you.... :-D

I have a universal driver for 98SE and yes, I tested it and used it on two computers so I know it works. It makes any flash drive plug and play.

Note: I've only run the 98SE driver and since i had flash drives from 3 or 4 companies, I know it was universal when I used it because all were recognized.

Robert, I have uploaded the universal drivers for USB plug and play in a 98SE computer. I can't send you a personal message so if you send me one, I will give you the links to download the two small files.
You can download them to any computer, put them on a floppy and then install them on the 98SE notebook. You should then be able to plug in the PNY drive and get it recognized.

    Yo folks

Maybe as a suggestion, uploading the file here http://www.mediafire.com/ and posting the download link as PMs etc maybe difficult for members with sub 50 posts and some long standing members may not wish to give email addresses out.

I have tried several flash drives with 98SE. Only the older, smaller ones work. Even the ones that supposedly have drivers for 98SE don't work on many. I gave up on trying to get an external USB drive to work. Tried every driver I could lay my hands on. Good luck Chief.

    Hi PLODR

I got your E-mail and loaded the files, couldn't get it to work, screwed around and finally got it to work then removed flashdrive and when I put it back in I couldn't get it to be reconized, Boy am I confused.

But I at least know that the USB does work (or I think it does)

    :cry

First, clean up the old USB devices that have been plugged in and removed. Windows lists all of them.okay, it could be the 4GB size of the USB drive. (these directions are from SanDisk tech support when I could not get one drive recognized in my 98E computer - the other drives worked properly).
    1. Click on Start, then Run and type in Regedit.
    2. In the regisrty box, click on Registry and Export the registry. (This is the safety net. If something goes wrong, you will restore the copy of the registry that you've saved).
    3. When prompted for a name, just all it preUSBcleanup and save it to the desktop.
    4. Find H_KEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and click on the + sign.
    5. Find the folder labeled Enum and click on the + sign.
    6. Under Enum, find USB; files will start with VID_#### & PID_####
VID stands for the vendor ID and PID stands for the product ID.
I only know that Sandisk has a VID of 0781.
You will need to look through all the entries and delete only those for jump drives. I can't stress enough to be careful because if you have ever plugged in a USB mouse or a USB keyboard, you do not want to remove those. (I'm not sure if the property will show the date but if it does and you see a date from the past few days, that's the one to remove).

I no longer have a 98SE computer to test it on so I can't see what you will see in the registry, sorry.

I have this note: when I installed it, I pointed the installer to C:\Windows\System32\Drivers
If you explore to there, do you see something called USBSTOR?
If not, after you are finished cleaning, reboot and then try the install of the driver again.

If you don't understand any of my directions, ask, and I will go into more detail.

If not, run the installer again.

    Hi Plodr

I am really scared to screw with the registry!

I found the VID & PID files in USB.

At the begining there is an AB.

There is quiet a few of them.

Are these the files to delete?

Do I delete all of them?

Also I checked C:\Windows|System32\Drivers and I found (USBSTOR).

I am not shure what to do.

    Hi Guys

    I am back.

Yesterday I turned on my Old notebook and the Drive "E" (FlashDrive) showed up on My Computer, I played around with it for a while shut it down and later started it again Drive "E" worked played around again unplugged the drive plugged it back in and could not be reconized.

I know it works but can't figure why it doesn't show up as Drive "E" and won't load.

    NO!
Does it seem to work only on a cold boot? If so, you may have to work that way. Don't plan on removing and reinserting. Keep it plugged in, do the work you want, then safely remove and shut down the computer until the next time. 98SE dos do things differently than newer OSes so you sometimes just have to learn to live with its quirks.

In my 98se, there is no date field, just key, value, and data. Helpful values may be Class and DeviceDesc to determine what something is.

I have 98SE and use the NUSB patch the link to which was given earlier and is below

    http://www.technical-assistance.co.uk/kb/usbmsd98.php

This patch for me has detected 1Gb & 4Gb Corsair flash drives (with different chipsets), Sony digital camera, Sandisk card reader and 1Gb / 2Gb micro SD cards. Lately, I have used a 250Gb Seagate external USB HDD and it had no problems.

Did you follow the instructions for installing NUSB (Native USB) detailed on this page. You must first remove ALL existing drivers for USB flash drives in Device Manager.

    http://www.technical-assistance.co.uk/kb/win98se-usb-mass-storage-drivers.php

If your mobo only has USB1 support then you are looking to install v2.4.

Version 2.x will only add support for flash drives. Version 3.x will replace your mobos existing USB2 drivers and also add support for flash drives

I have this very patch (v2.4) installed on USB1 and USB2 mobos. I prefer to use version 2.x since I do not have to remove my existing usb2 drivers.

You need to be clear on the following, there are 2 drivers here. The USB1/2 drivers for your motherboard and then the driver(s) for flash devices, NUSB in this case. With v2.x you must firstly uninstall all flash drivers only (leaving the mobo's usb1 driver intact). With NUSB v3.x, you must in addition to the above also remove your mobo's USB2 drivers prior to install.

I hope I have explained this clearly and that it helps.

    Good Luck

If I were to upgrade to WinME would that solve my problem?

Where could I get a FREE copy of WinME?

Would this be a Smart or Dumb thing to do?

    Thanks

There are no free copies of any version of windows, no matter how old they are.

Linux, and it's distros like Ubuntu, are free to download, cheap to buy on CD, or you can get commercial ones with customer support. They need special software to run Windows programs, though.
