Which end goes where? The 9 pin is connected to a COM port? Is there anywhere in the software to select the port number it is using?

25 pin ports on a PC are usually parallel.. you may need a regualr 9pin or a 25 to 9 pin converter. My experience has been *most* devices communicate via serial ports, not parallel ports. So once you have it connected to a pin 9 or "com port" on the PC it should be a matter of the software detecting it or going in and selecting it port by port until it responds.

its a laptop does that make any diff? it has to plug in to a 9 pin plug but the laptop doesnt have a 9pin only a 25pin so i had to use a converter. so how do i make it scan the ports? The software has a spot were you can only select the exact port but i have no idea how ports numbers work so i dont know what to try?

I am still confused about which physical ports you have there - what is the make/model of that laptop?

You can, if you have the COM port settings, like baud, bits, etc. Go to
    Start>Programs>Accessories>Communication> and run Hyperterminal.
Just put anything for a name, then on the next window put your com parameters and select a COM port. With the device hooked up on both ends (to the cart is it?) see if you get a stream of data, you may hit return a few times. It maybe numbers or junk but if you see nothing go through and next time pick the next COM port available, and continue until you see data or have no more ports to try.
This method works for modems, truck scales, and GPS unit, hopefully it will work for you.
Or just use the software and keep changing ports til it works

I'd like to know for sure if we're wasting our time...
or you can follow my previous directions and try every port with hyperterm - if you know the communication parameters.
