A different Sims 2 error

Heres my situation, I've looked everywhere for solutions and just can't find one. It is a very common error to which no solutions have worked for me.

"The application has crashed, the application will now shut down."

Now let me explain. I have all but several of the expansion packs, and the ones I don't have, I used copies of a friend of mines** (I know your rules, please bear with me).

Since then I have reformatted my PC, when I went to reinstall the Sims, I noticed half of my disks have gone missing, and I was advised to download copies instead. Everything installed fine, and the game would load, I would select the neighborhood -- that would load, and when it finished loading, it would then crash. After trying every solution imaginable (drivers, reinstalling, registry cleaning) I decided it must be some kind of issue with the illegal software. So I removed all signs of illegal copies, include daemon tools, Y.A.S.U, and other stuff. I then again completely manually uninstalled and then reinstalled just the Original Sims 2 Disk. Loaded it up, and the same exact issue. The only other issue I could imagine is the massive amounts of malware, however I play many games, many of which eat tons of memory, and have never experienced issues. I have an error log from Sims, but I don't know quite how to read it, and diagnose anything.
