A disk read error occured

My daughter says she tried to install something on her gateway laptop, win XP. Said it would restart the computer after installing, thought it was something for her camera. Anyway computer turned off and didnt restart. Now when i turn it on it says "A disk read error occurred Press ctrl+alt+del to restart". When I do that same thing happens again. I have put in windows disk and same thing occurs, wont boot to disk. Pressed F11 and get a menu that allows me to boot to main drive, cdrom and Lan? chose main drive and cdrom, still get same error. I dont believe I have a recovery console.

 

press f8 and choose safe modlue
and then run chkdsk
