    Hello,

I'm hoping some of you experts can help as I'm completely exhausted with this!

    System:

    Vista Home
    Athlon 5600 (2.8 GHz)
    RAM: 4 GB

This computer is just about a year old and I have kept up maintenance to a "T".

    Problem (s):

2 DVD/R combo drives and recently none of the burning programs I use will recognize either one. I'm getting a "no writeable drive found" error. I am able to watch DVD's; just cannot burn them. Both drives will also read and write CD's. Strangely, the only way I am able to burn DVD's is with Windows DVD Maker. It will recognize, convert, and burn. However, I HATE that program; very slow!

Also, this leads to a couple other problems while trying to fix the burning issue: last thing I tried was a system restore. I am unable to do that because I keep getting a "drive failure" error. Tried running restore in safe mode with the same results. I am also unable to run checkdisk. It just will not load?

Here's some things I HAVE tried:

    1) uninstalled and reinstalled both drives, although I knew that wasn't the problem because I just purchased an external drive. 2) Ran all virus and malware software I have on my computer. Minor issues were found, but that didn't solve the problem. 3) Shut down all running programs in msconfig. 4) Updated all drivers, although Windows says they are all current. 5) Ran latest Windows Update. 6) Tried 3 different brands of blank DVD's. However, I knew that wasn't the problem because they worked fine not more than a week ago. I haven't installed any new software or made any changes to my computer.

I'm sure I've done other things as I have been working on this for days, but I can't think of any now.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

    Thank you!

Hello. I'm perhaps you're least reliable source here, however I think the above mentioned action could be problematic - or at least part of the problem. My understanding is that using msconfig (at least nowadays) is a no-no, and can/will cause issues/problems.

Is msconfig set to "Normal startup"? If not, I am certain that it should be. I'm sure someone else will come-along here with more help/info.

    Best in the meanwhile ...

Since my original post, I have discovered that I am unable to burn either CD's or DVD's with anything but the Windows built in programs; Windows DVD and CD Maker. All other programs (I have SEVERAL) do not recognize them as writeable drives. Checked the IDE connections and they are fine.

    Any ideas???
