    alright.
    1) I need a laptop
    2) my price limit need to keep as close to $2000
    3) these things are important
    a) High quality
    b) excenellent performance
    c) best "bang" for the buck
    d) will be able to still be useful for a few years and not be too far behind tech wise.. (dual core)
    4) major uses- email, web surfing, watching dvds, MS office, and basically only these games- World of warcraft, Medieval Total war, Warhammer mark of chaos, age of empires 3. Im not intrested in any PC games beyond those (except perhaps COD4)
    5) assume it has to windows vista.

so of all the various laptp dealers and models

which brand- and model would yall suggest? (example dell vosotro, asus ferrari, etc.)

Fred's link above is a REALLY nice PC, and the OP would save about $400 too....

That is a sweet machine. I like my Toshibia Satellite A205 series (bought 8 months ago) but Freds link is much cheaper, faster and has better graphics. Newegg is the first place I start for research and reviews.

You might be able to qualify for education discount, are you student/teacher or work at school?

The newest models have just been released, so might see some deals pop up on the older models;)

If you do buy Macbook & want more ram it's cheaper to buy elsewhere at newegg several 2x2gb for $77 :major

K, let me put this in perspective for you.

You can do this cheaper than what I have configured, but is merely to prove a point.

Which is the best bang for your buck? You tell me.

1999.00 MacBook Pro (1800 with edu discount)

    2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    200GB Serial ATA Drive @ 5400 rpm
    SuperDrive 8x (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
    2GB 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM - 2x1GB
NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT with 256MB

    Dell XPS M1530 @1869.00
    Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor T9300 (2.5GHz/800Mhz FSB, 6MB Cache)
High Resolution glossy widescreen 15.4 inch LCD(1680x1050) & 2MP Camera
4GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz (2 Dimms)
Size: 250GB 5400rpm SATA Hard Drive
    256MB NVIDIA® GeForce® 8600M GT
    Dell Wireless 1505 Wireless-N Mini-card
Dell Wireless 355 Bluetooth Internal (2.0+Enhanced Data Rate)
    Finger Print Reader XPS M1530

This can be had much cheaper than what I configured, especially if you DIY and buy ram elsewhere.

Lets see. For pretty much the same price, lets see them compared.

CPU. Dell wins by a huge margin.
Memory: Dell has twice the ram.
Hard disk: Dell has a larger hard disk.
    Fingerprint scanner: Dell has one.
    Display: Dell is higher resolution.
Dell was also configured with BTH and Wireless-N to match Mac support.

Whatever floats your boat, and Dell is far from the least expensive, but do realize that Apple does not offer a very good deal for their hardware vs. others, unless, as I have always maintained, they do something specifically that meets your needs. You had mentioned before you like your power, and you like your games. The CPU and hard disk are going to be the most trouble to upgrade later. You could go less ram, and get a bigger hard drive, or faster CPU, for instance, and buy your ram from somewhere else. If you are in need of the Apple "experience", then your only answer is a Mac.
