A (legal) bit torrent question

So, knowing the nefarious uses of p2p software in general and bit torrent in particular, I have a question about using this for the legitimate transfer of data between users.

A friend of mine and I are working on a video together(one we shot ourselves, to clear up any doubt), but he lives out of state. He has a huge raw video file (8 gigs or so) that I need to start working. Obviously this won't fit on a DVD, and my friend is a computer idiot and can't split the file no matter how many times I tell him how. Buying a dual-layer burner isn't a possibility, so that won't work either.

I thought, then, of the wonderful world of bit torrent. If we have clients (which we both do *ahem*), can he create a torrent file to allow us to share the file? Could he simply email me the tracker file so that I don't have to go to one of those torrent sites and get the Man all up in my business?

I know that the general code of the Whitehats 'round here is to avoid any p2p stuff, so if anyone could at least point me to a place that might be able to help, I'd appreciate even that.

In theory sounds reasonable. The real power of torrents is distributing the load, being there are only 2 of you don't expect that. In light of some ISP throttling torrents:
I'd still try to get him to split it up (http://www.freebyte.com/hjsplit/#win32) is easy to learn / use and the just use filezilla server to host the parts for you to download. So far FTP in not throttled...yet.
