Well I spent £20 on an Artic Cooling NV Silencer 3 for my FX5900XT.
    w00t!
It is unbelieveably quiet - virtually silent!
My GPU is now @ 424/771 (stock is 390/700) and because of the fan design, the mobo has dropped from 38C to 25C and the CPU from 54C to 50C.

    On the downside...
I bought this from dabs.com and it didn't fit. The mounting posts were in completely the wrong places - they refused to accept it's return  so I had to mess about chopping the posts off, drilling new holes and fitting new bolts. dabs - you suck

Oh, this is probably one of the best mods I have done - my whole world is a much happier place to be :D

i had the one for the 5700U chaintec and it didnt cool the same

before i had the stock cooler on it with a busscool pci fan below it and had it clocked to 525/1100 [no joke] and it ran at 90-98F [on GPU]

i put the Artic Cooling NV Silencer on it and ran at 114 -125F so took that thing off and put the stockcooler back on it and it runs at 90-98 still

those temps are while in BFV for about 1hour and alt tab out realy to check the temp while still in game

and i use Arctic Silver 5 on GPU and CPU [hell even on the ram coolers i have]

Pic 1 - the hoover tube ensures fresh air is drawn in to the cpu cooler rather than recycling warm air

The NV3 is right above the VIA chip and sucking away nasty heat

Wow that case is packed; how can you get any airflow in there:confused:

It lies on it's side with the side cover off the 2 80mm fans are sucking heat up from the mobo.
I said in a different thread about the huge difference taking the cover off and lying the tower down makes with temps - nearly 10Celcius!!!
Tower designs are stupid - none of my stereo stuff stands upright - the amps generate quite a bit of heat - so I'm putting a mesh cover on 'top' of my PC to stop small children/ furry animals from falling in :D
I still can't believe how much quieter this thing is now :)

Did your 5900XT have HS/fans on both sides of the card? This MSI card I have does & I have it running @ 490/880 completely stable. It never gets over say 43-44c, even after hours on end of Battlefield Vietnam. it idles @ 35-37c depending on the room temperature.

The Heatsinks on both sides is odd, as I've not seen it on any other MSI 5900XT's. Everywhere I've looked they only have the one. Wierd huh?

I can take it alot higher ( 510/970 ) & retain stablity, though it does tend to get a bit hotter.

Mine only had heatsinks on one side - where do you get GPU temps from?

    Q. I dont see the temperature settings, is this due to my card?
    A. The temp settings panel is only available with cards equipped with thermal sensors. Some cards that I know of have temp sensors are 5700 Ultra, 5800 Ultra, 5900 non-Ultra and Ultra, and 5950 ultra. But really it all comes down to the manufacturer. I have seen some 5700 and 5900 without temp sensor, but mainly the cheaper XT/LX/SE versions.

If there is a choice between increasing GPU speed or RAM speed which would you go for?

Coolbits will add a "Temperature Settings" in the "Display Properties" tab if your card is equipped with a sensor.

I get them from a Digital Doc 5. I had to remove the HS from one side to install the sensor, but it works very well. The temps are usually the same as what the "Display Properties" show.

Well in my experience it's a combination of both to get the best performance & stability. I've also found that the card will take more of an increase in the "Core" speed rather than the "Memory" speed. It really is a "trail & error" ( with the emphisis on error ;) ) thingy. ;)

You'll be lucky if you increase the memory speed beyond 2-8% off the original settings. Core speed ussally goes up 100-150mhz higher :D

Does cooling make that big of a difference to your computer, Or do people mostly do this for looks because I know a friend of mine that uses water cooling and it looks awsome.

it does make HUGE difference in the way your pc runs

i can mostdef tell the difference in the way this beast runs if its 102 -107 on the cpu compared to 116-122F

    big difference

it may not be damageing the system at those temps but it runs a hell of a lot better [faster]

and the games run better just jerky and less lag [i dont get any lag on this system and i play a full settings]

and yes some folk only care about the lights and junk i dont care ahole lot but i dont mind a great looking pc
