While you are waiting, search on lost toshiba laptop password

What model Toshiba, that might help?

Sounds like a BIOS password. (I am understanding the OP correctly in that this password prompt appears before the operating system loads, right?)

Depending on the model of laptop, it may be possible to access the CMOS battery (without completely disassembling the laptop). Removing this for 30s will clear the BIOS, and cause the system to forget about this password.

If you were to remove any access panel, and if that exposed the CMOS batttery

    Looks like this:

Taking it out for a short time ~should~ remedy your problem.

Thanks Mada_Milty. I've done this in desktops but never in laptops. I don't know if the battery is readily accessible, without a full disassembly. I will ask my local computer store if it is possible on Toshiba's and ASUS' laptops.

If it is so, it would be a major security weakness in laptops, IMHO.

Generally, it doesn't work on laptops. A lost laptop password really is a major problem.

My only thought is that there were some models of laptop that suddenly asked for a password when none had been set. It was a BIOS fault. Would need the OP to post exact model number to see if that would be relevant.

Hiren's bootcd has a program called killcmos (http://majorgeeks.com/KillCMOS_d2969.html) on it. Have never used the program, but the CD has recently made the saving of a few laptops and their data a whole lot easier. PCLoginNow is another handy tool if you forget an account password. Live CD's and USB's do a lot of the heavy lifting here...just a thought after doing some reading, good to have an extrta PC around the house for guests to use : )
