I feel a brief introduction about myself is appropiate due to the fact that I am asking for assistance from you, the patrons of Major Geeks' web site.
My name is Michael. I've opperated a computer for 138 days. I'm a father of two boys. I am going to create educational software. Thank you.
    situation;
I am trying to metamorphise my computer from Windows XP Home Edition w/ SP2 to Windows XP Professional W/ SP2. My computer meets all the required specifications, or so I've read. My delema occurs at the Microsoft Upgrade Web site.
Microsoft states that my computer has been upgraded past the original WinXP Home Edition(SP2) and that I must allow them to reinstall WinXP Home Edition(SP2) in order for them to make the change to WinXP PRO(SP2), (all data wil be lost).
I am looking for steps that will facilate my goal without data loss.
I hope this question is not too--novice.
    Sincerely Machiavel

Thank you for your response. You may be wondering why it

took me so long to respond. Simple-I couldn't figure out how

to send a 'thank you' to you on MG's web site. Go ahead,

laugh it up. The simplest rote actions that are second nature

to you with computers are still quite unfamiliar to me.

That Microsoft link you posted for me doesn't address a

methodology to change Windows XP Home Edition SP2 to the

Windows XP Professional SP2. This is my dilemma. Even the

supplied installation disk for XP Home Edition covers the

switch to every other windows program except Home Edition.

    Go figure.

Again, thank you ever so much.

    Michael

I was under the impression you were upgrading from Windows XP Home Edition to Pro.

If you are trying to just convert the OS, its not going to happen. At least, we cannot assist you. That is illegal, and besides it being against forum rules, MS would rain fire and brimstone upon this site if someone ever posted how to.

    Sorry.

No you are correct. I bought windows XP home on oct 25/04. On my installation disk is tells me that I must upgrade to windows Pro in order for me to accomplish what I want to do. I am not and will not do anything illegal what-so-ever man!

As far as I can tell I have all the necessary system requirements and what have you. Excuse my low vocabulary in computer lingo. Mostly, I speek "Dad'. I'm on a huge learning curve. So please bear with me my friend.

Ok, well in that regard, the article I posted does indeed address how to upgrade.

If there are problems, or errors, please post them here. The article dooesn't assume XP Home to Pro, but the process is identical.

Alright my friend. I'm going back to that article. The litrary voice used in your response tells me that I must of had blinders on when I perused said article. The notes you sent are much apprecaited. I meant no disrespect.

    Thanks

I think to upgrade from xp home to xp pro you must remove SP2 and then reinstall it after the upgrade.

Only if the upgrade CD doesn't contain Sp2.

Most of the copies on the store shelves do.

Ok, well in that regard, the article I posted does indeed address how to upgrade.

    Upgrade to Windows XP
This section describes how to upgrade to Windows XP from Microsoft Windows 98, Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me), and Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional.

Note Before you start the upgrade process, obtain and install the latest BIOS upgrade for your computer from the computer's manufacturer. If you update the BIOS after you upgrade the computer, you may have to reinstall Windows XP to take advantage of features such as Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) support in the BIOS. Update the firmware in all of your hardware devices before you start the upgrade if you can.

Also, you may want to disconnect from the Internet during the installation. Disconnecting from the Internet during the installation helps protect you from malicious users. You may also want to enable the Microsoft Internet Explorer firewall. For more information, see the "Enable or disable Internet Connection Firewall" topic in Windows XP Help. For additional information about how to prepare Windows 98 or Windows Millennium Edition for an upgrade to Windows XP, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
316639 How to prepare Windows 98 or Windows Me to upgrade to Windows XP
    To upgrade to Windows XP:
    1. Start your computer, and then insert the Windows XP CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive.
    2. If Windows automatically detects the CD-ROM, click Install Windows to start the Windows XP Setup Wizard.

If Windows does not automatically detect the CD-ROM, click Start, click Run, type the following command, and then click OK:
    CD-ROM drive letter:\setup.exe
    3. When you are prompted to select an installation type, select Upgrade (the default setting), and then click Next.
    4. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the upgrade.

If there are problems, or errors, please post them here. The article dooesn't assume XP Home to Pro, but the process is identical.

This is just a personal response. There is no such thing as a dumb question. Also don't be afraid to ask anything. Myself I have seen some questions that most would think are silly. Most posters in this forum are really great at helping no matter what the question is. Its how we all learn. By helping each other. We all have to start someplace. So don't ever be afraid to ask anything at all. No such thing as a dumb question. Welcome to major geeks.

The activity of me upgrading my computer from XP-Home to XP-Pro had to be put on the back burner. For the past couple of days...."is it days?" or "is it weeks?" Whatever, my youngest son (14) decided that my parenting skills needed exercise? He has monopolized my total being in his own self-preservation. I have been rather preoccupied.
