a patch a day

i have been getting 2-3 patches most every day since my (new) w7 did its mass "catchup" update last wed. the first coupla times (thurs, fri), i figured they were items FROM said update which straggled b/c they needed reboots before proceeding. but i've had several reboots since then with the updater clearly telling me "system up to date; no mo updates". and yet, come a new day (sun...mon...), there's a couple more ready to go!

what's going on here? i have rarely seen updates any day but tuesday in the past. is my system doing something screwy, or has there indeed been a flurry of daily updates this month?

    -----
btw, after my latest batch wrapped up today, i clicked on the "check for M/S updates for products other than windows" link -- first time -- whereupon it suddenly read "checking for windows update installer" or something to that effect (like it did in XP). once finished, it INSTALLED something and then said "you are now capable of getting windows updates".

what were the last 65, chopped liver?!

so, have i just installed the windows updater on TOP of the same windows updater which came by default?

    certainly wasn't PLANNING to.

    :(

Most likely Defender definitions. Ive got two now, one update for W7 x64 KB2533552 and one for IE9 upgrade or install, can't tell. As I have already installed IE9 on my second machine, no reason to possibly gum things up on my main machine eh?:-D Plus I don't use IE, but I'm still curious.;)

i'm still curious. i tend to get 1-4 every single day. is this normal?

is "patch tuesday" solely an XP thing?

i got online with my old (XP) pc for the first time in 5-6 weeks and hit updates with the anticipation that there would be about a dozen backed up. and yet there was only one.

now i'm more confused. was there really only one XP update in the same span of time that w7 had 40 or 50?!

no updates yesterday whatsoever; i checked as late as 1 or 2 am (today, technically).

then this morning i find "13 updates; 42.4M" available...plus another 55.4M in optionals!

    what thu...?? patch wednesday now?!

    :confused

Sadly its not always an exact science when the update servers will push out updates to a particular area, at times the team that deals with WSUS or MU may call a halt if some feedback from TAP, MVP or TechBeta channels flag a potential issue, then resume once they have checked the issue out.

However while their is this coined "patch tuesday" which will push out majority of the hotfixes, service packs and updates, its not set in stone you may see odd ones periodically, main one you may see if you have Windows Defender active as an update for that may come 1-5 days per week.

Also depends on what Windows version and service pack is installed and what apps from Microsoft you have that are within the WU program schedule, Windows XP may see more/less (likely less these days) than that of Vista or 7, but it also depends if you have MS Office installed and you may see more updates listed, you may see even more if you have Defender, MSE, Windows Live Applications, Silverlight, MSQL lite etc

The amount is also varied between even two different Windows 7 PCs for instance, they may get different ones, as Home Premium, doesn't have all the components Pro, Ultimate and Enterprise has, so its a fluid number as to the amount of updates you may get.

Only thing to do is install what you do get listed as Critical or Important and review the Optionals to see if you need them.

Hehehe, I can see how 'critical' those updates are to you.LOL Still, gotta give MS credit for pushing these out and hopefully that we don't get caught by an exploit by being so lackadaisical about it, at least on my part.

See CatT the updates and how many are variable per PC and software installed.

@Augie, TBH you are one person that exploits are going to not factor too much, with your experience in knowing what's on your PC and how it works, which is why download not install on WU can work for some, but the novice user really does need auto-updates enabled as in download install, despite what they read on the net or what a friend of a friend, whose a geeky person says.

In part that is why I have users I deal with that are not tech savvy install Secunia PSI to help them keep up to date with many apps and Windows as well as auto-updates.

I absolutely agree with you there DavidGP, I would actually let MS install the updates but not reboot my machines automatically as I run them 24/7. Perhaps someone can write a boot-up script for me that will input my W7 PW, start VMWare and its Ubuntu client and then initialize the folding. I'd be a happier person then!:-D

I have auto updating enabled - I THOUGHT (guess i better check) . So I did a manual check and found the 13. Gonna check my Windows Update settings now . Yep. Auto updating is set at daily at 3am, and my computer has been on all night long for the past 3 nights in a row.
And NOW ive got 2 MORE (important) updates after running another check - apparently something is not right with my automatic update. Oh - how important is .NET framework updates ? I'm not real clear on what those are anyway, and my OS SSD is getting full (40gig) - I thought 40 gig should be more than enough for my OS. Guess I need to go through everything on that drive and move/delete stuff that doesn't NEED to be there - I only want/need my OS (7) and I also put Firefox and files related to FF on that drive intentionally . Anything else I can put on one of my other drives.

Ya, I just updated too and I've still got 3 that want to come 'home'. A 40GB SSD has to be watched religiously(I have one), if you don't use hibernate then you save the same space as you have RAM, move your page file to your HDD and check on your restore file folder. I also load my programs on another drive. CCleaner might be a good choice now too.
