Since this is my first post I would like to say that you guys have a great website/forum here thats so helpful with very generous staff... Anyways, i just downloaded steam so i can play counter-strike 1.6, but after i installed it i ran it and it doesn't start up because it can't find the steam server to update the steam database. I used to have norton 360 when i installed it, but i got rid of that now and it still doesnt work.. dont really know what's the problem.. now im using nod32 smart security.. thanx for any help cuz im itchin for a frag!!

try to turn off all your security stuff(firewall, anti-virus) to rule out a software problem. if it works then, you'll have to make a rule in your firewall settings to allow steam to connect to servers.

Well I actually did that, i unintalled all the anitvirus/firewall programs i had and tried it, still didnt work... could it be because i live in Jordan (middleeast)? but the thing is i used to use Steam before and it was all fine, but now im tryin to get it to work on this new computer i got...

Norton can be a real pain to uninstall. Did you use their official removal tool? If not, you probably still have lots of Norton left-overs that can create problems for you. They have their uninstallers here, make sure you download the correct one for the version you had.

It can't hurt to try the steps suggested here either. :)

And to my knowledge Jordan is not on any blacklists yet... I don't know if Steam has blocked it on their own though. It might be worth your while to find that out as well.

Great! As long as your game works again, who cares if it was because of us or because of you, right?

    Happy fragging! :guns

I had my first Steam install experience recently while trying to load Empire: Total War. Steam has to be one of the pickiest programs I’ve ever run across; in fact there was a while there where that’s what I wanted to do with it – run across it. Steam’s on-line support is somewhat helpful, but there are so many issues that might cause a problem, it’s difficult to pinpoint your particular issue.

Number one issue seems to be the firewall setting blocking a connection to Steam’s servers. I fussed and fussed with my Windows Vista firewall (32bit), even trying to just turn it off without any result. I then started on my DSL modem/router thinking I had to authorize all the ports the Steam web site lists as a possible fix. By happenstance I noticed the modem/router also had a firewall, something I had not noticed before. That was it. By changing its setting from the default of medium to low Steam was able to get through. The Vista firewall is not a problem.
