I was wondering if anyone knew of a program that would allow me to setup times in which this computer could be operated, so that it would turn itself off at say 8:30pm, and not be able to turn itself on until 7am, or whatever. Any ideas on what to look for would be wonderful, or any program that does at least something like this...

For it to actually not be able to turn on, it will require a hardware device.

I know some BIOSes allow you to auto turn on at certain times, but I don't think they will do what you want.

Hmm, I can only think of programs that have say a lockdown until a password is put in

Wasnt me, but first - what OS are you running, if it's XP set a password for the bios and a password for the user accounts. THEN... I think there is a program that will do that, try a google search.

you could just have the box inside of a locking case thingy

like some desks have that area you can store your tower and it completely hidden from site, something like that with a lock.

simple carpentry solution no computer knowledge needed

I'm sure Iamien made a program that wouldn't let anyone log onto the computer at certain times of day, as were set though the program. Maybe not, i forget. My friend wrote a logon script that would log the person off again if it was Tuesday :p

i need to put a lock on my puter to prevent people using it in my absence. (i have roomates who have there own email accounts and use my computer to access them, which i dont mind IF IM HERE ! i read the review of winlock, and although much more complicated than i need, it would enable me to do this. sooo i guess the question is, is there a simpler FREE way of simply locking it up, or is winlock my only solution?

not sure what winkey is. lol. im assuming you mean the one with the windows logo on it. press that and l, pressed both together. start menu appeared first time, log off window the second time. HOWEVER ive worked this out all by myself (someone give me a pat on the back) so heres how.
    start-contol panal-user accounts-change account-add password.

this only works if you only have one user account. it puts a password on the account user icon when you start up. in my case i think it should work just fine cos if they cant get to start then they cant change it, or add new accounts (i think)

    many thanx and aloha
