Something strange happened today i booted the PC as normal and all was OK until i left it alone for a while (about 1 hour ) after 10 min it goes into hibernation and when i returned i brought it back on line but the screen resolution had changed, i went to control panel and re-set the res to max (i have a very high quality screen) then just out of curiosity i re-booted and it was back to low res and all my icons were large plus i could only see about half of the normal screen??

    any ideas please:confused

ps i am using Vista home premium

One cause could be confused hardware. Try going to the device manager and uninstalling the monitor, then reboot. After it redetects your monitor, set the resolution back where you want it and reboot again.

I agree reinstalling drivers is a quick and easy first step, but I would do the video card drivers first, since they are typically responsible for detecting the monitors resolution, and providing the correct options in display properties.

Those would be under 'Display Adapter' in device manager.
