A-squared false positive?

Thanks to the forums and free software found on Majorgeeks I am experienced with fighting Malware on my computers. However I have a question about a program I run from time to time that A-squared Free (version 4.0.0.63), is detecting it as a malicious program. It shows that pm.exe, which is used by Port Monster, is a high risk backdoor Trojan. Since I am running Zone Alarm and have a hardware firewall, Port Monster is used occasionally for troubleshooting suspicious activity. The latest updated versions of AVG and Spybot Search and Destroy do not detect this program as malicious. Is it possible that A-Squared is detecting a false positive? About 8 weeks ago I asked the people at emisoft.com about this issue directly but have not received a reply from them.

Hi

I like you would suspect this is a FP as Port Monster is a legit app (as we list this one on MGs too so has already been tested for its maliciousness), sadly applications that monitor things like networks etc tend to get caught up in being flagged as a False Positive at times, lets hope that A-Squared get their defs updated soon.

Could just try the file by uploading to http://virusscan.jotti.org/ always find its a good judge of a file.

Halo,

I followed your suggestion and ran the test at the link you provided. It is only an issue for A-squared/Ikarus. (That is a handy tool.)

I should have known better but believe in asking questions before making an assumption. If there is a 50% chance I might get something wrong I usually do.
