Hi folks, i opened a thread on this topic but now can't find it, can anyone refer a better firewall offering more protection than Win 7 thats idiot proof?

I know about Tiny Wall and Win 7 control but am looking for something else. I don't really know what to allow and not allow .

    Thank you very much

    Hi

The Windows 7 built in firewall is good, and better when combined with a NAT router, so check out what security your router has as it maybe just enough, as I use Windows 8 and its firewall and my SpeedTouch TG582n.

But also make sure your security as in antivirus and malware apps are good reliable ones, as well as making sure you keep Windows and your apps fully up to date and to help with keeping apps up to date I suggest to users this Secunia PSI as it really helps keep current.

But for suggestions as to 3rd party firewalls I would go with for Win7 http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/privatefirewall.html

Unless your other security as in Antivirus/malware software comes with a firewall as many "internet security" software all in ones do.

    First Win & firewall thread

If you do not come here often and your post gets pushed back pages, it might help you to click on the Thread Tools at the top right of the first post and select, "subscribe to this thread". When someone responds, you will get an email with a link to the thread.

Then it is best to let Win 7's firewall do its thing without you making rules.

You can add this to Win 7's firewall to temporarily allow something if you are not sure

Thanks David and plodr, actually i am a long time Secunia PSI user and currently use Kaspersky AV but had Avast free in the past and it worked very well for me.

I also use on demand scanners like Mbam and SAS but even with my safe surfing habits i have been a victim of some Malware.

The reason i asked about a stronger firewall is due to my job that requires me to use public wifi on the road at times with no NAT protection.

The firewall for Windows 7 is pretty idiot proof, and can be tightened as much as you want.

You are a victim of Malware, due to your surfing habits, and opening infected email attachments.

The only time i ever even go to my email is when i signed up for this site, haven't used it in well over a year.

This site was recommended by somebody to get a few recommendations for a different firewall because i was told Win 7 firewall lacks what other free firewalls offer especially when working on unsecured networks .

Thats what my question was , an answer like stay with Win 7 firewall after i specifically said i want other recommendations is not helpful.

I also said i don't know what to allow and not allow and Win 7 firewall has minimal if any outbound protection , i wanted a recommendation of a firewall that provided both with minimal user input , apparently i can't get that here so i'll look elsewhere.

    Thanks anyways.

Windows 7 Firewall is good with minimal user input. It will actually learn from your habits. If you want to tighten it with better rules, there are set rules out there, that you can install if you wish.

To add, I do not even use the built-in firewall for Windows 8, unless my notebook is roaming on someone else's LAN, or out in the wild. Then it is on for Guest/Public networks. I am behind a Gateway that uses IPTables, which is hardened to not allow stuff through, that should not.

Unfortunately, what you have been asking for is somewhat contradictory.

    1. You want a firewall with greater inbound and outbound protection than the Windows 7 firewall.
    2. You said you do not know what to allow or block and you want a firewall that requires minimal user input.
    3. You also want something that is "idiot proof" ?

Private Firewall, which DavidGP recommended will cover request number 1, but not number 2 and 3.
The Windows 7 built in firewall, which others recommended, covers request number 2 and 3 but not number 1.

If you use Private Firewall or Comodo Firewall, there will be more popups asking whether to Allow or Block certain access requests.
AFAIK, that will occur with any third party firewall that provides very good tight security.
That's part of the price you pay for greater security and more flexible security.

mjnc, actually windows 7 will cover all three points. You just need to go in and tighten it, to do #1. Same goes if you were using IPTables for Linux.
