a success story (so far)

I got hit by some Cool Web Site adware that Norton AntiVirus 2004 was unable to fix or delete. I followed the Spyware Removal advice in http://forums.majorgeeks.con/showthread.php?t=35407 and it worked! So far, my system is clean today!

I could not run the free online scans at Trend Micro and Symantec in Safe Mode with Networking. So, I ran in normal mode. Trend Micro only picked up infections in the Temp folders and Symantec found nothing.

Also, when I ran Ad-Aware SE in safe mode, I got a warning that the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) had disabled and the system would shutdown and restart in one minute. I ran services.msc and right-clicked to get the properties of the RPC service. In the recovery tab, I set the restart service time to a higher amount to allow Ad-Aware to finish scanning. After the scan, Ad-Aware was able to delete the last pieces when I rebooted (remember to click the box after the scan)

Another neat feature was the Tools tab in SpywareBlaster where I manually changed my Internet Explorer browser pages from the pesky redirect to something I wanted it for a homepage.

All in all, it took a non-expert like me about 9-10 hours, but I think I'm clean.

Symantec's webpage for the SuperSpider adware is not up-to-date. And I'm glad it was a weekend or else I would have ended up paying them $50 to maybe help me.

And I really could not have done it without this website. I learned a lot from the sticky posts and will follow their advice.

 

Thank you for warning me. I ran the Symantec worm blaster and nothing was found.

I've also already installed Service Pack 2 for XP.

I've done all the steps in the malware thread except use the alternate browser. I think I'm Ok with IE.
