I am trying to burn an audio CD using Adaptic easy CD creator but this program defies all logic!

I opened the Adaptec, and followed the steps to burn a CD. On the last step, Adaptec gives me an error message saying, "This application is unable to use your CD writer as it is currently being used by Adaptec Direct CD"!!!???

DUH! Well, OF COURSE it is being used by Adaptec Direct CD, since that is the application I am using to burn the CD!

Can anyone tell me how to use Adaptic Direct CD to burn a CD without using Adaptic Direct CD?

ALSO...Once I open Adaptic Direct CD or any of its components, I am unable to eject the CD unless I shut down windows. What gives?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Start>programs>Adaptec Easy CD ceator>features>Cd copier follow the prompts. pretty much after that you put in your source CD and your media CD and press "copy"......................

At least that 's the way it works on my box.
I am assumimg that you are trying to burn a copy of a single CD. Are you wanting to make a single CD from selections on several?

No, I was trying to burn an original CD from some WAVe files stored on my computer. There was no source CD because the source files were already on the computer. There was only a target CD.

It took me til 4 AM, but I finally figured out what the problem was - it seems that if you put the target CD into the computer before Adaptec Easy CD creator asks for it, you have done a terrible NO-NO and Adaptec will never forgive you. Never mind that there is no clue of this important detail anywhere I looked in the programs instructions - you are just supposed to know!!!

And Roxio's tech support is WAY more trouble than it is worth.

Now can someone please tell me why Adaptec will not release the CDRW drive unless you completely close windows??? YIKES!

What version EZCD do you have if its version 5 then I would advise making sure you have all the latest updates and even to the point of uninstalling it and reinstalling afresh and then updating.

EZCD and DirectCD cannot be used at the same time, I know they are part of the same app but they are different apps DirectCD is the packet writing app like Nero's InCD once you put a packet written ( Drag N Drop ) CDRW into the drive DirectCD locks it until its finish with... if in the mean time you open EZCD up to add data to the CDRW it will give you that error message and lock the drive until you restart.... poor shoddy programming IMO ... thats why I now only use the Latest Roxio Drag to Disk app only and not EZCD Creator 6 .. I use Nero for all other burning jobs.

I have version 3.5c which came bundled on my computer at purchase. I would like to uninstall it and just start over with a completely different program, but I really do not have the time to learn another application and am afraid I will end up with something as bad or worse.

The funny thing is that I never started Direct CD - but somehow the application started itself when I inserted a blank CD into my CDRW drive to be the target of the files I wanted to burn in Adaptec Easy CD Creator. I don't know how Direct CD got into the picture, but it effectively ruined my ability to burn a CD for at least 8 hours hours.

I suspected that my inability to eject the CD in the drive had something to do with the issue you are talking about - that Direct CD will capture the CDRW and will not release it until it is "finished". The trouble is that when you never started it in the first place it never gets "finished"!!! This also the reason I can never us my CDRW drive to back up any files - backing up files to CD is a sure way to make Direct CD go haywire!

I use Adaptec to back up to CD all of the time. Go to create DATA CD, navigate to the files you want, drag and drop, hit "create CD". I suspect that your proggie has some corruption in it. Against popular opinion, I have always found Adaptec one of the most user friendly burner programs.

You might also consider D/L one of the programs available here on MG. :D

Thanks for the suggestion. I will try that next time I want to back up.

The problem is that it is so much more convenient to be able to use the "back-up" function within a program such as MS Works, and with an application like Quicken, there is little room to be creative in how any function is done. Trying to back up Quicken in an other than ordinary way has always made me wish I were dead. :( Quicken is very persnickerty when it comes to backing up! ;)

    Just two questions:

    1. When you create a CD in the way you are suggesting, can you keep adding to it and updating as the files you are backing up change? The major problem I have with backing up using my CDRW drive is that I can easily back up a file the first time, but then the CD is closed and will not accept additions or updates. With a program such as Quicken, it is imperitive that you back up your file every time it is changed - and that requires a software that will allow the back-up file to be updated frequently. Adaptic doesn't like to allow even one back-up change. Plus, I don't like wasting a whole CD for one measley Word Processor File.

    AND

    2. How do you let Adaptec know when its services are no longer required? I have yet to use Adaptec without it kidnapping my whole CDRW Drive until I restart Windows. WHERE IS THE OFF BUTTON?????

The fact is I would love to learn Adaptec - (I already have it on my computer and that counts for a lot with me), but I find the "Help" files more confusing than the program itself. And don't get me started on Roxio's Tech support!!!! AARRGGHHHHH!!!

not an answer -just one experience.

Ever since EZ CD creator mucked-up my version of XP Home I have been using Nero.
I know that this is no useful answer to your post but I thought I'd at least mention the fact tha Adaptec SERIOUSLY messed up my pc at one point (they HAVE fixed it now, which is cool, .... ...but!).
The fact that even one of their products gave me that much grief was more than incentive to switch to NERO.
Since the switch I have had no problems.
(just one opinion out of a googleplex of opinions).

Quicken suggestion (I do not use quicken and am unfamiliar with it) copy the files you wish to back up to a seperate folder first and then back up the folder.

To add data to a disc that has already been used: The answer is in the media. You are using CDR media (itsounds like) which allow one use and then you are done. Buy some media that is CDRW and then you can add/delete data to it numerous times.

Were I you I would go to www.roxio.com and see if there are any available updates for your system. My program came with my burner and I've updated the proggie before. try it. the worst that can happen is that there is none available for OEM installation.

THE OFF BUTTON: interesting question. In my program there is usually a cancel option, or an "X" in the upper right hand corner. When the burn is done you are generally offered some options such as "make jewel case" etc. I just close from there and the program is done. I know that when I burn copies of CD's I often have to close the target and source CD boxes.
This program should not be "capturing" your CDRW. I would try to update. What kind of computer/OS are we talking about? How old is it? I assume that your CDRW is built in and not a peripheril, correct?

Thanks, Boccemon - I'll go over ther and take a peek...needless to say that I'm not real eager to get tangled up with more Roxio products - but you never know - this may just solve my problem.

BTW, I don't think your Quicken suggestion will work for me. Quicken is pretty frustrating in its own way and can be very rigid about how it allows things to be done. That program will not even let me use my default printer software in the normal way - I have to print in Quicken's software, which is not as good as mine - (no duplex printing allowed). And when it comes to backing up, you will do it Quicken's way if you know what is good for you! :p When my check register is at stake, I am inclined to follow the rules! Well, at least it is possible to figure out and work with Quicken's idiosyncyrcies, which is more than I can say for Adaptec. That is one impossible program.

Oh, and 522! I hear you loud and clear! When I first got my computer the CDRW drive wouldn't work at all and HP provided a brand new computer according to the warranty. Well guess what? The new computer's CDRW didn't do any better and it turned out that Adaptec was at the bottom of all the trouble. It seems to me that Roxio should have been the ones to give me a new computer, but I haven't noticed them trying real hard to make thing right! Can you tell that I have no respect for this company???

LCH in reply to your 1st question you should leave your cd-r disk open after writing data to it. You cant append to a previous save but rather have to save data again with changes you made. When you leave the disk open it can only be accesed by your cd burner or another burner with DirectCD and not the cd rom until you close the disk. So lets say that your file is 1mb you can save it almost 700 times till you have to close the disk. If your file is too big to save over and over before filling up the disk then I agree with Boccemon on using a CDRW instead of a CDR. ;)

Hi all I'm in a similar boat so to speak as LCH, I had adaptec EZCD 3.5 on my computer originally, however I never really used it, then Time computers (spit, spit) sent me a copy of Roxio's EZCD version 5.0 I tried this out as I was getting into digital video and it worked fine, then as the months went bye and I had not used the program, the windows system removed it from my desktop I couldn't get it back on so I reloaded it, only to find out that it was the basic version and wouldn't recognise my disc drives, I tried the fixes on Roxio's website to no avail, I also went into the registry following their instructions and deleted something or other, I forget now, however I also deleted two other items that looked the same, I eventually managed to write to disc using a demo version of Nero, I have windows Pro XP as an operating system, I must admit I did like the Roxio version as I found it easy to use, I noticed that someone mentioned that it clashes with direct CD, if that is the case then does it also clash with InCD as I also have that loaded, maybe that is my problem, anyone throw some light on this, thankyou.

The wierd thing is that I always use CDRWs. But I am unable to append them all the same. As for the issue of leaving it open, I would do that, but have never been given that option. Adaptec Direct CD seems to have a default setting to close a CD after one session and I have never been given the option to change that at the time of backing up, nor do I know the proceedure to go into the program and change it manually. I am sure there is a way, since this program works fine for some people such as Boccemon, but I simply have been unable to make heads or tails of how to do it.

That is my main complaint about this program - it has such rigid programming and is very unforgiving when you can't figure it out. All the while I find the instructions vague and incomplete, so figuring out the protocol is almost impossible for me.

When I used Adaptec to burn a CD, the proceedure gave me an option to leave the CD open or to close it, but that was a first for me with this program. I think it must have something to do with the fact that in the past I have been backing up files on CDRW within a program such as Quicken or MSWorks, and this time I actually had EZCD open and operating directly.

All the same, whether I actually open the program directly or not, Adaptec Direct CD seems to run in the background every time I use my CDRW drive (remember the problem I had when trying to burn a CD using EZCD Creator). That is why I am hesitant to uninstall it and use another program - I don't know how much it controls my CDRW or how much my CDRW needs this program to function.

You can change the option by opening DirectCD Format Utility / Select Options / Check the "Always Leave As Is" box under the CR-R Eject Options: to always leave the disk open or check the "Show the Ejected CD Notification" box to be asked each time what you want to do. Or you could simply leave the CD in and it will remain open even if you shutdown or restart your PC as DirectCD only closes on ejection. If I am wrong someone please post as I dont want to give out bad advice as he has got enough problems with Roxio as it is. LOL.

Sorry for the lateness of this reply but I'm on a lot of other forums helping or being helped ( the later mostly lol ). Hope this gets you a little closer in acheiving your goal. ;)

Oh ya I forgot to mention that you can also access the DirectCD options in Windows Explorer by right clicking on your RW drive, select properties and clicking the DirectCD options tab. Now go kick its butt! :D
