Cleaning up my add/remove programs and I have in there:
Abby FineReader 5.0 Sprint 101 MB
Abby FineReader 6.0 Sprint 116 MB

I found another post from someone saying this was scanner software so I do need it, but wonder if I need both? This is on our old desktop so any space savings is needed! Thanks!

Can you actually open each of these programs from your Programs menu? Can you think of any reason why you would need two versions installed? If not, I would remove the older one.

I was able to and I decided to take a change and remove 5.0. They are definately used for scanning, not sure if my scanner needs them or not but I do have one running so hopefully it will be enough. Thanks!

A question about "I do have one running", do you mean you have a scanner app. running or Abby FineReader? If you mean Abby FineReader, it is an OCR application that doesn't need to be running unless you want to convert a scanned image to some type of text document.

For instance, you scan in a news paper article and save it as a .jpeg, then you use Abby FineReader to open and read the .jpeg and save it as a text file or "send" it to say MS Word.

Abby FineReader will use your scanner application to scan an item directly or you should be able to configure your scanner application to send a scanned item directly to Abby FineReader.

"not sure if my scanner needs them or not", see if your scanner application has an option to "Convert scanned item to text (OCR)" or something similar. If it does, check it, scan an item and see what the scanner application does from there.

I didn't phrase that very well both the 5.0 and the 6.0 were listed in programs and I was able to click on them and open them. Going to check on my scanner OCR next, thanks !
