Hi gang! Glad to be here. This is my first post.
I just got a new computer (HP Pavilion) which has Windows XP Home on it, as did my last computer. I have Acrobat V.5.05, which I used on my old machine, and which I have installed on my new one.

My prob is this: If I go to print a page off the internet, which I'd like to print using Acrobat Distiller, I'm not offered that choice. Instead, two options are presented: My printer (hp Officejet 6100 series) or "Microsoft Office Document Image Writer." Distiller isn't in the box. But if I go to Control Panel/Printers and Hardware/Installed Printers, I find Distiller IS there. And the odd thing is, If I select the MS Writer, the document is printed to a file, and If I then wish to print that document, Distiller is offered as an option.

I have nothing against the MS Writer; it seems quite nice. But for various reasons, I would prefer to use Acrobat Distiller

My question: Is there a way to achieve this?

Any/all help would be much appreciated.
I'm going to enjoy being a member of this group!

    Best,

Hi Bill ..... strange but your name seems familiar from somewhere.. will come to me at some point BUT onto your problem.

this may help http://www.adobe.com/support/techdocs/2dbaa.htm I had similar problems with Acrobat5 and XP sometimes I had to install it 2 or 3 times over its self to get it to recognise distiller.... now thanks to company have migrated to Acrobat6 at home.

    Need to clarify...

Hi, Halo. Thanks for the prompt reply!

Since Distiller appears in the "printers" section of Control Panel, my assumption is that it is installed, and I thought maybe the MS product was blocking it in some way. I'm not too handy with the kinds of steps your post requires, so thought I'd verify before I try something that could get me in the soup. When I see a word like "pathways" I kind of freeze up! ;~))

    So what I'm asking is:
Does the fact that distiller shows up in that section mean that it really IS installed? Or...?
And if I upgraded to Acrobat 6.0, would that solve things?

Several years ago I did post a few questions here, but I have moved since then and have a new address and when I tried to use the old to log in it didn't work, so I just signed up "de novo." I posted no more than 4-5 times all in a short time, and if you can remember that, you have a phenominal memory!! There are a few other things I have done, unrelated to this message board that could have caused you to encounter my name, but it isn't extremely likely unless you're involved with horses or BBQ cooking.

    Best to you...

Thanks again Halo. If you could clarify thius for me I'd appreciate it very much.

    Come to think of it...

Come to think of it, I know that Distiller works, because I downloaded some material last night using MSO Image Writer, stored it in a file, and then just to see, I printed it out using Acrobat Distiller. And that worked fine, producing a ,pdf document.

BTW, Halo, I saw reference to "Poker" in your personal data. Do you play Hold'em?

Hi Bill, that must be it I remembered you from being a member already ( YES I have a very good memory... I've not got a true photographic memory but I can picture all sorts of places, people, info, pictures ) but I did think you were this Bill Conklin http://www.anti-irs.com/

I can play poker but very badly... I am a member of a casino but tend to if I go play Blackjack or Roulette.

back to the issue at hand.... so its listed in with Printers & Faxes? what if you right click and choose "set as default printer" the Acrobat PDF printer... will it print?

I would be tempted to as the Adobe instructions say to Disable your System Restore ( right click my computer > Properties > System Restore and click disable all drives, reboot and reinstall Acrobat.

What the Adobe site says with version 5.05 it has an issue with the MS postscript driver overwriting the Adobe one but by turning off System Restore you should be able to bypass that happening.

once or if it works turn system restore back on just follow the turn off instrustions but untick "turn off system restore on all drives"
