About big LCD's

A freind recently bought a new PC and 19" LCD monitor, and it seems that all the fine detail is very fuzzy. Fine print is almost impossible to read.

The res was set to 1280 x 1024. We changed it to 1024 x 768, and then to 800 x 600 to no avail.

Is there some other display property setting that needs to be configured when using this type of monitor? I use a 15" LCD at 1024 x 768 and have never had a problem.

It is a brand new Dell, fresh out of the box. Not ruling out a defective monitor, but I think it is more likely a setting, either in Windows or on the monitor itself, but I haven't any experience with big screen LCD's and resolutions above 1024 x 768.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks,

    Steve

    a few things to try

    Update GFX card drivers.

Is GFX card have a DVI connector and if the monitor is also DVI plug into that connector rather than analogue.

Adjust refresh rate from default 60hz to 75hz

Use ClearType to adjust the apperance of text on an LCD http://www.microsoft.com/typography/ClearTypeInfo.mspx you can do this online at MS or download the full Powertoys for XP package and it has a cleartype tweak app included http://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=U&start=3&q=http://www.majorgeeks.com/article.php?sid=710&e=9818

You know, Tasty Kakes? Jelly Krimpets?

Oh, I forgot... They aren't available in a lot of places. They're made here in Philadelphia, but in some parts of the country they can't get them.

Anyway, they freakin rule! I'll send you a case sometime.

the problem is you aren't setting it to it's native resolution. Look in the manual or just keep going higher on the resolution settings until the type looks clear. What you are seeing in the blurry fonts is called anti-aliasing. this keep the fonts from looking blocky.

I don't think she wants it any higher than 1280 x 1024. Are you telling me that, if she wants to view text clearly, she does not have an option as to what resolution she can use?

After paying that much for the monitor, I now have to tell her she can only use a certain resolution? Oh boy...

All LCD monitors have a native resolution based on how large the individual pixels are made. There is no way around it. It is a matter of physics, not price. You may be able to find a monitor that large with a different resolution, but it is going to look somewhat pixelated due to the pixels having to be rather large for that size screen.
