My homepage has been hijacked. The address bar reads about:blank, and in the add/remove program list, I have noticed three suspect programs: home search assistent, search extender, and shopping wizard. None will be removed. I came here, did everything in the FAQ section (adaware, spybot, etc., read forums, etc.), yet my browser remains hijacked. I have a hijackthis log in notepad and can post it if need be. Any help much appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks for the reply PhilliePhan. Don't have time to try your advice at the moment; will have to wait until tomorrow. Will let you know how it turns out. By the way, long time Phillie fan here myself, esp. Schmidt. Have his rookie card plus many others, autograph etc. Again, thanks for your help.

Ahhh... A fellow sufferer :) Hate to give up on the Phils, but injuries are killing 'em. Schmitty is one of my favorites too, along with John Kruk. Too bad the bottom fell out of the card market - but that's not why I collected as a kid in the first place.

Good luck with your computer. I was in your shoes once and it can be frustrating. You should peruse Major Attitude's posts on how to prevent this crap from getting on your computer in the first place!

    PhilliePhan,

Be careful of the advice you give. gyevans never even gave an OS. This is the first thing you should have asked for. Running the steps in link 35407 is always a good first cleanup step.

But the user said "about:blank" not HSA. So running HSremove (which is not for all OS's) and my Generic Solution in link 38772 (which is also geared for HSA problems) do not apply.

    Chas,

You are absolutely right. I think I'm so used to running into problems with XP that I kind of expect the OS to be XP. I'll be more conscientious.
As for your generic solution, again you are right - but I definitely believe that anybody who suffers a hijack ought to take a look at your post if only for the examples alone. There is a great deal of educational value there.
You do good work and I don't want to step on your toes. I just remember when I had to deal with this crap: I wanted it fixed as soon as possible. I was just trying to point gyevans in the right direction. Thanks for reining me in.

    PP,

No problem! It's great when people help. We just need to make sure that the help suggestions are on target and valid.
