about:blank

I normally use MSN for search and e mail. Now no matter how hard I try to go back to this as my home search page I keep coming up with about: blank.
I have tried spybot and adware it takes it out but comes back at next rqeust to go online. It has gotten so bad that in trying to use other search engines or tyring to access my mail it takes me to this search Microsoft Internet Page with the address of about:blank.

 

I'm also getting the about:blank windows popping up every time I log on,I removed MSN Messenger and it didn't help.What gives?Judy

 

I had that pesky issue as well some time ago. Spent days fighting to get it out. What finally worked was a program called CW Shredder. Its available on this site. Removed it no problem. When you run the program it will clean it out but willl still leave the home page as "about blank". Just go and change it to your prefered setting and all should work.

Ace's heart is in the right place but you should read ALL of the pinned posts at the top of the page about how to post asking for help, etc. . . Then, start a new thread and give the info as per those posts. About:Blank is a pain in the butt, but chaslang is an expert at eradicating it! Take a look at some of the other recent posts concerning this beast for similar symptoms.

One of the reasons I like this forum is that it is a “hands on” forum. Instead of having you wait two or three days for a volunteer who is up to his eyeballs in HijackThis logs to finally get around to helping you, you are given the tools and basic instruction to help yourself. And, most times, this does the trick! Plus, as you say, you begin to understand the problem and how to prevent it in the first place (STEP 1!) What’s the point of fixing a problem if you are just going to let it come back?

That said, as you can see from chaslang’s About:Blank Generic Soulution, this is a monster that is hard to pin down. I suggest you follow the Basic Spyware, Trojan and Virus Removal tutorial very thoroughly. About:Buster is the proper tool for this job, but again, follow all of the steps in the tutorial.
