Hi. Total computer neophyte here, so pleae bear with me. I was in the process of cleaning things up based on what I had read on the site. I checked to see if either Network Security Service, Workstation Netlogin Service or RPC Helper were running and lo and behold all were. I was able to disable NSS and WNS as per the instructions on this site, but I was unable to get rid of RPC, so everytime I log on, I get the default home page rather than my own.

When I right clicked on Properties and tried to click Stop and the disable, it wouldn't let me. The icons were "blocked". I couldn't make the changes as I did with the others, so it is still on started mode and automatic. I went to log in tab and was able to disable it there but it made no difference. How can I get that off of there before installing my spyware program? Incidentally, which one should I use and is it reliable to download them or should I buy them in disk form and install? Thank you for any help you might be able to provide!

    Major meltdown...

Not only am I having the about:blank problem, but this morning when I started the computer up, I got a message from Mcafee virus scan saying that I might not have enough room on my system and the start icon in the bottom left of the screen did not appear (nor did the typical stuff that shows up at the bottom right of the screen).

I could still get onto the internet but can't shut down because no icons are present!

    What the hell!???????

you haven't mentioned that you ran any of the files (thread name below)?

Sticky: READ ME FIRST BEFORE ASKING FOR SUPPORT: Basic Spyware, Trojan And Virus Removal

you need to follow all the instructions and run these programs, then give an update, etc.

fyi, you can download all the files from this site, just follow the links. - sosaman

Did you run all the other steps in < READ ME FIRST BEFORE ASKING FOR SUPPORT: Basic Spyware, Trojan And Virus Removal > too. Including About:Buster and HSRemove?

If so, and you are still having a problem, you should read the tutorial in this Sticky thread NO HIJACK THIS LOG FILES BEFORE READING THIS: HJT Tutorial & LOG File Posting

Now post a HijackThis log file as an attachment to your message. All running programs should be closed, including your web browser, e-mail. Close before running Hijack This!

Do NOT run Hijack This from the Desktop, a temp folder, or a sub-folder of C:\Documents and Settings, or choose to run it directly from the downloaded ZIP file. Place it in its own folder, for example C:\Program Files\HJT

Make sure you have HJT version 1.98.2 and follow the guidelines on where to install it and how to post a log as an attachment.
