I'm after a good, idiot proof and free guide to Prezi. Can anyone please recommend one? I've posted a similiar question elsewhere. All I received was one unqualified opinion, "use Microsoft PowerPoint or Google slides". Is there a good reason not to use Prez?

    Hi Mark

I know about this app but never gotten around to using it for presentations, dahdah I use Powerpoint, mainly as I have Office 2013 and work has it also, as well as I use Office Online, and Office Mobile... covers all my routes and standardisation for work and colleagues to work on.

Also biggy for me in work is cost we have Office via a enterprise licence for Gov, plus the free option on Prezi is that the presentations are public and most of mine cannot be public as they have NDA and data protection issues associated with them.

As for Prezi, hey why not use it but a good pro and con list HERE which is interesting as the author uses Prezi and wrote a guide HERE

Some others that look basic enough.
https://prezi.com/support/ (the Prezi learn and support page is good and has some basic starting points)
    http://www.wikihow.com/Use-Prezi
Quite a few guide is you search Prezi Guides on YouTube

Pros and Cons for the other options, but worth exploring all.
MS Office Online (associated with a Microsoft account) gives you free Powerpoint (a bit cut down from full package but good)
MS Office full, costly, Office 365 is good but yearly subscription based.
Libre Office - Free (has a powerpoint clone)
OpenOffice - Free (has a powerpoint clone)

    Hi David

I had heard that Prezi presentations were public but had wondered if that was just the free version. Obviously, you wouldn't want to create presentations that are public which contain personal, confidential or sensitive material.

I'm a sixth form college teacher and I wouldn't want my presentations public either. For one think I'm not going to do work for lazy teachers!:)

The main reason I've been looking into Prezi was because I went for an interview. They asked me how I used IT in learning and teaching. I thought I gave a good answer. Well, I would wouldn't I. I didn't get the job but part of the feedback was that I hadn't heard of Prezi and it appears the successful candidate had used Prezi in her micro teach.

I honestly hadn't heard of Prezi before then. Interestingly I haven't heard anyone else talking about it since. At my college we're all still using PowerPoint. The licence we have also allows us to install the MS Office package at home. So I've access to a fully functional version of PowerPoint at home and work. Even if the college licence didn't allow this I also have my own MS Office package with a fully functional version of PowerPoint.

I'm starting to form the impression that I'm better off continuing with PowerPoint. I gave a presentation last Friday to a training session for teachers. No feedback about me using PowerPoint instead of Prezi. It seems to me I just came up against someone with a personal bias for Prezi. Some people seem to just adopt software because it’s new rather than because it has any practical use.

    Thanks

    Mark

    Hi Mark

Yeah I though that in the free, the next one is $10 a month to make them private, but I looked for and found an education licence option HERE that's free for qualifying edu depts that keeps the presentation private, generally a work email address.
Thats poor a bit on just because you had not heard of an application, while I had heard of it before, I dont use it in work and I bet that no-one at that school has heard of MS Sway either, which is a good platform addition to MS Office. Or better still for Powerpoint and many will not have heard of this either is Office MIX its a brill add-on for Powerpoint that creates interactive presentations.

Plus you can always use Office Online Powerpoint and by sending Presentations to OneDrive you can view them anywhere with internet connection.

Indeed you are right 100% (sorry you didn't get this job opportunity), I think though at times its worth exploring different software to do a task like presentations, so you will know what they are in the future and draft up a Pro and Con list for each, that way you are informed.

I think in the end the best options are the ones you are most comfortable with as they give the best end result, as why use a product you are less comfortable with and give a semi poor result!? Think the thing is to read up and even use the free versions of these products, and give a presentation that covers a few of them.

Thing is Powerpoint is universally accepted, semi niche software is not.

Thanks for the info David. I might have a go with Prezi when I find the time. It'd be nice to have another tool to add to my ILT skills. I try not to over you PowerPoint but you made a valid point saying it's better to do a good presentation with something with which you're familiar rather than to use something but to fall flat on your face because you don't know how to use it. For example, at interview I'd never use an interactive whiteboard. I find them too variable and temperamental and you need to get used to one.

I, too, was surprised. It often makes one wonder if someone else was lined up for the post and because I didn't get it they had to find something. You'd have thought that they might have come up with something more professional in terms of an answer. Apparently I hadn't demonstrated sufficient knowledge of the use if IT in education. This was despite me talking about interactive whiteboards and their uses, using PowerPoint, virtual learning environments and the vast diversity of things that can be used for, using PCs in the classroom, explaining how I kept records and my mark book electronically, using voting pads, etc. They were amazed I'd never heard of Prezi.

You and me both, they never align correctly with the pen, even when re-aligning the board, we have moved in work to huge 65" Touchscreens running Win7, tend to work perfectly, but not cheap or that many schools can afford sadly.

JoeRay12 - makes a valid point in someone lined up for the job, the NHS is just the same, shouldnt be but goes on.

Wish you well in future interviews
