Just to keep everyone up to date and explain myself. Majorgeeks has always been about the quality. We are different than other sites and a lot of what we do affects our wallets. We try to run as few ads as possible and be unobtrusive. We try to test all the software.

And, on these forums, we expect the quality to continue. Because of this I am known by a lot of nicknames, most of them unpleasant. And I don’t care. If that’s the downside of PROPERLY helping people, then I can live with it.

In yesterday’s thread, a person wanted to know how to update their drivers. Their computer was a XP machine and produced in about 2005 and they installed Windows 7. The drivers have not been updated since 2009 for this computer and those were for Vista. Since 2009, for example, Realtek has probably updated their sound drivers no less than 13 times.

Let me explain how this works. Drivers are not rocket science, although some might want you to believe otherwise.

    3 simple FACTS:

1: Drivers work like this: The hardware manufacturer (Intel, AMD, nVidia, Realtek and on and on) put out up to date drivers. When your computer manufacturer gets these drivers they either repackage them or offer them as is on their site. They are the same drivers, only it takes the big company’s weeks, even months to add them. Sometimes those drivers are now 1 version old when you get them.

2: Computer manufacturers will offer driver updates for about 1 year, maybe 2.
3: In this case, no Windows 7 drivers were available, so drivers need to be obtained from the manufacturer. This means finding the motherboard, USB, sound, video and more. You can do it manually, or use a program to do it all. Since there are at least 2 good driver updater programs, the days of finding all your drivers individually are gone. Spend hours tracking the right software, or do it in batch with an driver program? No brainer.

So, I get to be the d1ck I am known for by offering correct advice, as a couple of people decide to tell this poor guy to get those 4 year old drivers or spend hours looking for the drivers. Hey, you want to help? YOU go spend hours and get the guy the links. Now, THAT would be helpful. Sorry, I can’t let that stand.

You want to tell me I am wrong? Anyone knows I never stop learning and I love to learn. Prove me wrong. PLEASE! As long as the end user gets the help they need, I don’t mind being corrected. It’s happened before.

People here need to do the same thing. Is it more important to show up some username and avatar across the globe or to help the person who needs it? Hopefully you know the answer. If you don't, you'll find out the hard way soon enough.

Personally, I don't feel you have to explain anything related to yesterday's issues. Bad advice is usually more obvious to spot than good advice, and someone presenting it in an ignorant manner will only serve to jeopardize this site's reputation as a geek site; I'm sure you've worked hard to earn that. I've had issues with one of the banned users before, and I have little doubt he'll try to come back as he did before under another name. But he'll be easy to spot.;)

You've got a nice core of 10-12 excellent helpers here (non-malware), you shouldn't worry over those that need a mind defrag. As you do when events warrant, just send them packing and move on. :)

No one could rightfully hold anything against the Major or anyone else with regards to this matter. If anything it's "Hip Hip Hooray!" for Major Attitude and the other moderators as well, for keeping the MG Forum standards so high for everyone in here.

Those two being handed their hats and being bounced off the site was probably a long-time coming and, at least in my opinion - for the best. I actually thought you guys at MG were very patient with these two (now-former) members. I mean it is one thing for any forum member to occasionally - hopefully, rarely - accidentally give an entirely incorrect reply to someone's question and/or from the original poster...

Like perhaps misreading the intention of their original post and the follow-up posts, or something like that. It is another thing altogether; to constantly, repetitively give very bad or at least incomplete and not-well-thought-out answers time after time. And then; when confronted by it or gently corrected - to get all distracted and denial-defensive about it. The forum is also much better off without all the name-calling nonsense; after being called out on the errors, as well.

    Good Luck! -- COMP
