OK ...I did the greeting ...now on to the tough stuff (or maybe not so much here). :)

New member with a question I have posted elsewhere ..with no real answer. I have looked and looked, but have not found it. I will try to keep it short ..but if this can be determined, I think it will help many as I have seen the same question posted in many places.

    Info ..
    >Old PC case with a 7 wire lead - separated ..from the front mic/headphone jacks to connect to motherboard. Connection at front of case has two rows consisting of 10 pins on a small pcb. (see pix)
    > New motherboard - Biostar A880G+ ..with a 10 pin connection point on board ..same configeration as on small pcb ..BUT manual says it takes HD only ..NO AC'97.
    > HD uses 9 wires running between 10 pin connectors on each end. I can buy this cable from Antec ..but like to avoid the cost of buying a dud part IF it will not work at all.

(see second pix showing different connection layouts)

So the question is ..will that 9 wire cable work ..OR does that small pcb that is currently on my older case prevent this, being originally set for AC'97.

One other caveat ..Newer cases apparently have the ability to use AC'97 or HD ..using the appropriate connector. To my knowledge these cases still have only a single pair of mic/headphone jacks -making me think that it is all in the wires as far as making HD work ..and not in that small pcb.

    Hoping for help ..Thanks.

    Hi Bama,

Unable to get your pics up so this may not have anything to do with your problem. A 10 pin header is nearly always used for that purpose. One of the pins, usually #10, is sometimes omitted and used as a key by plugging the connector's pin #10. Sometime it's left on with no key. MAYBE?

    Good Luck, Jim

    Thanks, Sarge (jlplp).

Actually it is pin 8 in this case that is the 'key'.

Looks as a if I am going to buy that cable and try it. Hopefully it will work.

'Jack Sense' ..pin # 7 is the reason I am trying to make all this come together. My understanding is that when all this is working properly ..a set of headphones plugged into the front jack will disable the output at the rear, but just when you are using the headphones.

AFAIK ..prior to this, using AC'97 ..if the front jacks were connected to the mainboard to use headphones ..the rear did not work at all ...period.

If I am on track in all this, someone please let me know and add anything else you care to.

All info is good in the quest. :)

    Thanks

PS ..jlphlp ...not sure why you can't see my attachments. Working fine on this end.

Thanks for the reply there, jlphlp.

Not sure why you can't see the attachments. They are fine here.

    # 7 in this case is the key.

I am pushing to hopefully get this right as AC'97 ..when attached from the front of the case to the board ..disables the rear outlets on the case. An HD hookup has 'jacksense', which will disable the rear ..but only while the headphones are plugged in.

Will watch a spell ..just to see if anyone may have another idea or two before I take the leap and buy the cable.

    Thanks again.

    Hi again Bama,

Pin #8 as key is usually a USB connection and not Sound. Look again for a #10 pin Key. Pins #9 and #10 are negative (Black) Leads and are common. If no pin #10 you usually just ignore #10. Not getting pics has something to do with my servers Acceleration. Will work it out and have a look.

    More good Luck, Jim

    Hi Bama,

Please ignore may last post. This 83 yr. old brain has failed me again. Pin #8 key is indeed the Front Panel Audio connector. Pin #10 key is the USB connector.

83? Man ..you do look to be doing well. Hope that carries through to the physical.

I am 62. All I need to do is get off my arse and exercise ..and I might just make it to 83 in good form ! Trying to eat better ..just need the other part:)

On the connection ..pretty sure on the board #8 - labeled as 'key' is no pin at all (see new pix). Not sure how that changes the discussion.

    Hi Bama,

Still can't get the pics up. Not giving up yet. Missing pin means the connector would have that hole plugged. My source says that pin #8 is the key and #7 is 'Reserved' meaning Not Used. 83 and still kickin!

    Jim
