Access denied

It's me again and now I have a whole new problem. I just reinstalled Windows XP Home SP2 with Dell's help and now I've got the following problem.

I opened a Word Perfect file and entered some data in it that I want to save. I saved the file as "Data" and then I copied this file to a CD-R.

The next day I wanted to add some more information to this file so I put in the CD, opened the file and added the information. When I clicked to close and save, I was told that this file is read only and that I could add data to it but I would have to save the file with a different name. So I assigned the name "Data 2." When I clicked to save this is the sign that popped up:

"Access denied, you do not have rights to do this."

I had files like this that I saved to CDs before my reinstall of Windows XP SP2 to which I would add things and I never got any of these signs.

In trying to find the solution I found something that says you can change the permissions on files and folders, but it didn't say where to go to do that.

I am the only one who uses this computer. I have only one user account which is an administrator's account. As administrator I should have rights to do anything, shouldn't I? Can anyone PLEASE tell me what I do now?

    Thank you,
    Nikilet

Sounds like the discs is being closed.. ie no more data can be written.. before you reloaded did you have Roxio DirectCD running? It is packet writing software which allows the user to write and delete to CDs and DVDs as if they were a normal drive.

I didn't have anything of this sort that didn't come bundled on this Dell. There was Sonic RecordNow.

I'd be most willing to purchase this Roxio if you think it would soft my problem but I'm afraid my problem has something to do with this Access denied business. I'm getting it with other things too. I can't figure it out because I have only one account and it is administrator -- although in trying to follow some directions from a Microsoft KB article, I started in safe mode and then went to log on and it showed both my account name and then also show Administrator. I am so totally confused.

It sounds like you're trying to overwrite data on a CD-R (opening a document on a CD-R and saving it as the same document)

CD-R's are not capable of overwriting, that requires a CD-RW :). If you only have CD-R's, you have to save the file with a different name and burn it to the disc, in addition to the original.

Actually, I checked and the disk I happen to be working with in all this is a CD-RW, not a CD-R.

Sounds like a read only to me too, at least PC seems to think so. XP Home has an "Administrator" account by default in safe mode only. XP Pro has "Administrator" account, that you can change the name of, for all operations. If you want to use it in Pro try TweakUI, under logon options.
