Access Denied

i have a friend of mine that contracted a virus that continues to reboot his laptop before it even gets to the XP flash page.

so I purchased an external hard drive reader, and it pulls up all the files perfectly, but the files he wants to back up are protected.

In vista OS he can view all the files but cannot only them. In XP, we cannot even open the Doc and Sett file that contains the pics.

He thinks he set the user accounts to private?

How can we back up these files before we format the HD?
