I have a Hitachi hard drive that came out of a friends dead laptop.
I connect it to a SATA port on my PC, it takes for ever to kind of access it; all it shows is Drive D and labels it SYSTEM RESERVED. I can't check properties or anything and it is a 100MB partition.
On one occasion, my PC also showed another drive (L) but I could not see what was in it.

All I want to do is recover photos and chuck the HDD. I think it is fried.

    Any ideas?

Actually, rather than put it internally into your computer, I'd tend toward connecting by USB after the computer boots up and see if it is visible. If it is not, then I'd try solution two.
    2. Boot a linux live distro and see if it can find the files. Linux is able to see a lot of things that windows refuses to do. But my solution is software not hardware.

I don't have a SATA - USB cable. Thanks for the suggestion, I will check if it is a cheap proposition.
