Access violation at address error

I have some old ebook files from about 2-3 years back that I'm trying to open. They are not pdf, epub, or anything like that. The files show up as a .exe file and when I first opened it after buying it, I would be ask for a code I received via email which would allow me to use the file whenever I wanted after inputting the code once. The files use to open on the current laptop I'm using, but now I get an "access violation at address" every time I try to open the files. The only change from when I was able to open the files a few years back is that I had a hard drive crash in 2011. The "tech" guy who supposedly fixed this laptop did a sloppy job and it took a few months to straighten everything out. I'm guessing the problem I'm having is due to his handy work, but I have no idea where to start tracking down the problem. Every time I get the access error, it's different from the previous time I got the error. These are the latest errors I've gotten:

Anyone have any idea where I can start trying to fix this problem? I was guessing that it was a problem with the firewall since it says "exception e access" but turning off the firewall and adding the file to the exception list hasn't help. I'm using Windows Vista 64-bit OS.
