Accidental shut down, Xp won't boot up

Hey everyone,

My friend called me just a little bit ago, crying cause her computer won't boot up. She said that her dog stepped on the powercord, unplugging it and now windows does not boot up. It runs through the scans, and then stalls when it gets to the "windows xp" window before you get to windows. It sounds like its the hard drive, but she said that she hasn't been having any problems. What do you guys think, and how should I go about fixing it. Thanks a bunch

Have you tried any of the F8 boot options like Safe Mode or Last Known Good Configuration? To access this menu, press the F8 key right when you power up and eventually you'll see a Windows Boot Options menu.Navigate it using the arrow keys and make a selection by pressing Enter on the option you want to try...

 

tried safemode, and didn't work, and the other function didn't work also. Could it be a hardware issue that occured when the computer was shut off, or was it the last shot to a hard drive that crashed it.

 

Do you have the Windows XP disk?

 

Yes i have a windows xp CD.

 

I would boot from you're windows XP CD and run chkdsk. I wrote something up once to describe the process: http://awesom3blog.blogspot.com/ Look at the second article. It's a little bit long, but it covers the different things you can use with the disk. If you get any errors or bad sectors, you should probably mention it so we can figure this out.
