    hey guys,

just got a brand spanking new 6870 and while i was installing the drivers I accidently brushed the reset button and reset my pc. now theres no image. what do I do now?

is there anyway to reset a video card back to factory defaults without use of the OS?

I would remove the new video card, replace the old one or use the onboard video if you have it, and start over.

    What OS do you have?

Resetting the BIOS and or removing the CMOS battery should force it back to default VGA drivers of the OS, Windows 7 is very friendly with most graphic cards.

I tried removing the CMOS battery and still nothing, I'll try some more stuff with it tomorrow, I have win 7 btw.

OK after reading your first post did you have the PC on while installing the Video Card?!? That is the only reason the PC would be resetting as you describe and you should never even have the PC plugged in while changing components.

What was the old video card and what is the new??

What PSU do you have you may also want to "smell" it and make sure it hasn't shorted/burnt out, if there is a burnt smeel you may have to do a test on this alone.

TURN OFF the PSU and remove the video card, then reconnect power and try and power up the system listening for BIOS beeps (you expect some without a Vid Card) and fans spinning up.

I never modify my machine without unplugging and removing all peripherals.

the old card I had was a 3870 Sapphire.

PSU is fine, no smoke or smells to be witnessed.

tried without vid card and with a friends vid card. but he wasn't sure if his was working at all.

also I'd like to point out it was reset while it was switching through resolutions while installing the drivers.

My bad I misread the first post.

Going off this as a guide the 6870 should actually be more efficient in power consumption than the 3870 and so the PSU power draw should not be an issue:

Did you try and boot the PC without any Video Card so it would force BIOS error beeps at least??

You may want to try the old "PSU and paper clip trick" you do this at your own risk, I have several times with just a single fan plugged in.

yeah, I checked without a card... no beeping. I really think the mobo is fried. everything turns on, fans spin yet no beeping and no post.
