So my brother just got a valued Acer 4520 for school, and was trying to connect to our wireless network at the house. It is running off Windows Vista Home Premium. We have several wireless devices (including another vista machine) and wired devices off our router.

The Acers automatic settings picked up our network fine, and connected. I noticed it would disconnect on its own every minute or so. At first I thought it may be conflicted with some of the other devices that were close, but no luck. I created a static connection for it, assigning it its own i.p. address - but got some very odd results. At first it worked fine, I even updated the system. But once it ran through some early updates, I could only get a limited connection. Odd right?

I restored the Acer back to before the system patch. I removed most of my edited profile connections, and have two connection profiles; the auto profile connection, which cannot get an ip address at this point, and the static address which is assigning it at ip address. With the static, it can get a connection, but drops soon afterward.

I've done tons of research, but am having problems getting any direct answers. I have a secured FiOS router, and thus far have had no issues other then this. Any ideas? Thanks for any and all help.

Just a little update on the issue, My brother (through the automatic profile connection) did have it connected one night with no drops. I do have the router set to channel 1 only (due to the needs of the Wii we own).

I keep assuming that it is getting drops due to cell phones and/or other wireless devices. Its just so odd because the other laptop (a toshiba running xp and the wii) in the same room/area are keeping connected fine.

    Solution:
Atheros posted new drivers yesterday for the wireless card. After the update (thank god) the connection stayed fully connected. 0_o
