acer aspire 5670 gets to windows but wont load user profiles

I have an acer aspire 5670. Windows XP.

I had a virus and removed it. All seemed ok until I did windows updates.

Now it goes through bootup process up until the part where i should see my name to click on and login.

There is just the acer aspire desktop showing but nothing else.

I tried last known configuration-same result. I tried booting into safemode but it wont--it just hangs after mup.
