Ok... so I have tried everything. The external speakers wont work, the internal speakers wont work. I have checked all settings to see if anything is muted.. I have uploaded the drivers for my audio program. All the audio things are all checked and do not show question marks or x marks. All the drivers say that they are working and updated. When the external speakers are plugged in.. when i tap the front of the computer i hear the speaker as though i am tapping a microphone. when i plug the speakers in to the ports it sounds like it would, if i were plugging in an amp. I read some of the posts off this site and tried a bunch of different things.. I ran the troubleshooter for sound. I am really at a loss for the next step here. Last night it was working.. there hasn’t been any changes.. In trying to fix things I updated all of my windows software, defragmented, got rid of temporary clutter, etc... everything is running smoothly...
    arg...help!
Thank you so much for any advise on this matter.

When did this start? Was it after the SP3 update?

Does the MS UAA or Realtek HD show in Device Manager, under the System Devices section?

it happened before the update.. i updated to try and fix things, and the sound devises are show in system devices section.. without any problems. There is no indication of a problem besides the fact that the sound has just stopped working...and it was just working the day before yesterday.

You mentioned that if you tap the computer with the external speakers plugged in, the sound comes through the speakers. Have you tried talking/making other noises to see if the microphone is feeding into the speakers?

If so, two possibilities: something in your default devices isn't set properly, or your sound card is going bad (which would suck, since it's built into the motherboard).

That's my two cents, anyway... hope you get it figured out!

Did you manage to get it working again Paint465 ?
I am having the exact same problem using Acer Aspire 7720 with Realtek. Everything looks ok, no conflicts, nothing. i have downloaded everything from the latest chip sets, to all drivers. I have even reinstalled winxp twice, but still no sound. All I can think of now is to grab a screwdriver and check out the audio jack as it could be in the off position. Any advice would be greatly appreciated..... thanks in advance
