My Acer Aspire 5100 Laptop won't turn on with or without the battery. The green power light comes on briefly, and the fan starts up for a second but then it goes off. I know it was fully charged because I never use it without it being plugged in. Is this a battery issue or worse? I have had it for about 4 years I guess and it did this same thing about 3-4 months ago. I unplugged it and left it alone for several weeks and then decided to try it again, and it worked like nothing had ever been wrong, so I figured it was a fluke - until now. Any help?

If the fan is quitting, the computer will shut down to protect the CPU.

I'm not sure if you are up to this (I'm too scared to disassemble my laptop).
Take it apart and clean the fan or better yet, see if you can replace it.
I don't know how you'd test the fan to see if it was the one thing causing the problem.
While you have it open, replace the coin battery in there.

Put it back together and see if the fan stays on.

If you're brave enough to take it apart, check the tube that runs from the fan to the heatsink on the cpu and make sure its not plugged up.
This is a very common problem in laptops especially those who own pets, or keep their laptop near windows, vents, and oscilating fans. They suck up ALOT of dust.
ergo, if the sensors can't detect any cool air, within seconds your cpu can heat up, and as stated above, the cpu shuts down so it don't melt down.

Well others seem to be indicating to disassemble it, here are some guides but "read twice" and pull apart once.....;-):

You do this at your own risk but they aren't any harder than a desktop, just the screws are smaller. Tip keep each group of parts seperated on different sheets of clean A4 white paper (from each stage of disassembly), spread out on the dining table and "Take your time".

this is straight from acers support site:

Q: Power Issues or Will not Boot

    A:

If the notebook does not power on:

Make sure the ac adapter is correctly plugged into the notebook and into the power cord.

If everything is plugged in correctly and it still will not power on, follow these steps to complete a ‘power reset' of the notebook.
Unplug the ac adapter. Keep ac adapter unplugged.
Remove the battery and keep the battery unplugged.
Hold the power button down for 15-20 seconds. (Nothing will appear on the display and none of the lights will light up.)
Release the power button and plug in the ac adapter ONLY. (Please note that a power indicator light should be lit on the ac adapter when it is plugged in).
    Normally power on the notebook.
If the unit does not power on, remove the ac adapter and insert the battery into the system.
Plug the ac adapter back into the system, the battery charging indicator light will light up.
If the battery charging indicator light does not light up, the ac adapter may not be providing proper power to the unit, and may need to be replaced.
