    Hi Everybody,

My mate had a problem with his laptop, he's asked me to have a look at it for him, not too sure how to fix it. I have a bit of knowledge about computers.

The laptop is an acer aspire 6935 with windows vista home premium service pack 1. Intel core2 duo 2.00ghz with 3gb of ram. Theres loads of space left on the hard drive.

Right, what it was, when he started it normally he was getting the blue screen flash up after log in. The laptop would then restart and it would just carry on doing this, although I can log on to it on safe mode.

I have done an online virus scan in safe mode as I can not seem to get any normal virus scanners installed and working in safe mode. This found a virus and removed it. I have updated the video drivers for the laptop and tried windows update (which did not work), i tried the windows update readiness checker and this told me it will not work in safe mode! I have taken out each stick of ram separately and tried to boot the computer in case there was a problem with this, this did not work.

I have tried to repair windows from the F8 advanced boot menu, when i do this i get taken to a log in screen where i must select new user. When i select this I can not get nay user/password combination to work? Does anybody know how to sort this?

If I stop the computer restarting on shutdown i get the following error code:

    ***STOP: 0x0000008E (0xC0000005, 0x8248F329, 0xA036E91C, 0x000000000)

This means absolutely nothing to me, although it might mean something to somebody on here.

I have also downloaded a vista repair boot CD, although I can not get it to boot from this as the BIOS as it is locked by a password, which my cousin has forgot! I have read that this can be reset by removing the CMOS battery, although I cannot see this when I take the back panel off the laptop. Will this work? If so I might take the whole thing apart.

Or does anybody else have any ideas what could be wrong with it, or something I can try?

Sorry for the long winded post, just thought id put on as much detail as i could. Any help is much appreciated. If you need to know anything else let me know, thanks.

    Regards,
    Dean

    Hi,
Has your friend added any new software/hardware or installed any new drivers lately ???.

    try disabling everything in startup.....

While you are in Safe Mode, click Start and type msconfig into the Start Search box then hit enter, then open up the Start-up tab and disable everything, then reboot into normal mode, and see if anything has changed...

if it boots ok go back and enable the startups one at a time hopefully this will find the culprit. you must reboot into normal mode after each enable.

    Hi,

You may try to restore your PC back to defaults. The process of restoring PC to defaults is simple, just hold the [alt] key and press the F10 key right when you turn the PC on to start the recovery program. Check out all the new software that you have installed on your computer, if the software are not genuine and authenticated, remove them, because they may be the cause of problem. Another way is, get in the BIOS and turn of the option of Autostart at system failure.

michelsmith, check the date of the post. I'm pretty sure that in almost 5 months, the user has come up with a solution.
