    windows xp 32bit sp3. Internet service (comcast), router and cable are all good as i'm using them now on an old laptop to post this. Computer is a dell inspiron 530.

    Avast notified of "blocked" something, ran malwarebytes found 4 things:

    Registry Data Items Infected:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Security Center\UpdatesDisableNotify (PUM.Disabled.SecurityCenter) -> Bad: (1) Good: (0) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Security Center\UpdatesDisableNotify (PUM.Disabled.SecurityCenter) -> Bad: (1) Good: (0) -> Not selected for removal.
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Security Center\AntiVirusDisableNotify (PUM.Disabled.SecurityCenter) -> Bad: (1) Good: (0) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Security Center\FirewallDisableNotify (PUM.Disabled.SecurityCenter) -> Bad: (1) Good: (0) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.

    Deleted these, restarted and local area connection shows acquiring address......never gets an ip.

    Ran tdsskiller, found nothing.

    Disable / Enable of local area connection in network connections doesn't change anything. Repair connection: "windows could not finish....: Renewing your ip address" TCP/IP under properties is checked.

    ipconfig/release: ip address for addapter LAC has already been released

    ipconfig/renew: error occurred while renewing interface LAC: the RPC server is unavailable.

    Tried the winsock fixes thru cmd, no change. Ran winsockxpfix and winsockfix, then restarted both times, no change

    control panel: admin tools: services shows DHCP client as auto, stopped. Pressing start gives "Could not start....Error 1075 the dependency service does not exist or has been marked for deletion". TCP/IP NetBIOS is exact same.

    Tried reseting windows firewall to default.

    System restore fails, but "undue last restore point" shows the last failed attempt to restore.

    Reinstalled drivers from dell. no change.

    Thank You for taking the time.

    We have had good luck with Tweaking.com - Windows Repair that fixes most Windows settings to default. IF your problem is something from a malware infection, this might find it for you. It sounds like it is from an infection due to the many settings you had to change in your post that should not be.

    ok...downloaded tweaking, following its instructions I downloaded combofix and ran it, it said I had rootkit zero access.
    Since this appears to be malwear, and I have ???'s, I'll start a new thread in malwear......I'll update if this fixes the internet access issue, or if i'll need more help.
    Thank You
