Does anyone have this program who is proficient with it?

I would like to ask you a couple of questions

    Hi

You'd probably get a much better response if you asked your specific questions and then go from there.

    Hi Peter

I do have True Image 10 still, not installed as I use 2010 version now, but as you also in your other thread mentioned you have bought with the HDD version 2010, then I would stick to that as its more current version and much better than the version 10.

I could install version 10 in a virtual PC to test what you need if you ask the question? but as I mentioned version 2010 is better and I gave you some easy to follow instructiosn in your other thread that will help you.

I suspect he might not mean version 10 because that is from 2007 but instead might mean 2010 which is probably up to version 13 now.

I am fairly knowledgeable with Acronis 9 and 10 not to be confused with Acronis '09 and '10.

Ask away! if I don't know I have some contacts within Acronis where I can get answers without having to go through all the bs.

    It seems the make/build is causing some confusion;
Acronis true image 2010 in small letters and beneath them
    'Back up and Recovery'
Tech says I simply have Acronis True Image 2010 boxed.

I seem to have resolved my Acronis questions but will be back if necessary.
I wanted to thank you for your offer.
I have schedule set and plenty of room with 1T.I tested my rescue disc and it works. I have practised retrieving lost files also.

Btw, I have laptop which I would like to protect in case of disaster.
Could you point me in the right direction keeping cost in mind.

I do not know how much it costs to be able to use Acronis on the laptop or how to go about it.
Perhaps I could do something else to protect it like back it up using xp's backup.
I do have that 1T external hard drive so I may as well use it but I don't know if I have to create folders before I back something up there, what to use to get the laptps's sytem to the external drive, or just what to do.
The external drive is W.D. My Book with SmartWare but I read that that software is not good -it is only one source I heard about it from. If it had integrity, I could install it in the laptop and use it to back up the system.

    Thank you

Are you using a trial version of Acronis or did you purchase a full version? I would just create a full system backup with Acronis and save the image on an external hard drive.

    >>Aronis True Image Home 2010
    PC Backup
    +Recovery
That is how it appears on the box

I want to back up ter laptop.
How much does a second license cost and how do you get it?
I have an old ghost 9 laying around but it might make matters worse.

There are two perfectly good free Acronis lookalikes now for 32 bit systems, Macrium Reflect and Easeus ToDo, and both are available as downloads here at MG.

I just looked at the Acronis site which has a special for $50.00
I did not pay that much for my original.
I'll look at the ones you recommend and thank you.

That's a different product plodr. I'm pretty sure the OP has Acronis True Image Home 2010, which is fine on laptops/notebooks.

There is also DriveImage XML, also free.

I believe all of these free ones require the target drive in the restore process to have an active partition to restore to. I believe the Acronis product does not have this small restriction.

Macrium certainly doesn't have that restriction. Here is the relevant part of Help -

"Select the destination for the restored partition. By default, the original location will be highlighted and selected. You can however restore to any partition or groups of adjacent partitions on the same disk."

... and the equivalent from Easeus ToDo -

    "Restored Partition Location:

    Select a partition which you want to restore the backup to;

    Restored Partition Type:

There are three options: Active, Primary and Logical.

When you choose either of the options, you will see a description. You may select the special partition type to your requirement
    . "

What I meant was that they have to install to a PARTITION and not a raw disk. Not so for Acronis TrueImage.

Ah, sorry, misunderstanding. The term active partition normally means that a partition's Active flag is set in the boot sector partition table, telling the boot process where to look for a boot file, such as ntldr in XP. I couldn't see how this could affect image restoration in any way, whichever program was being used. :-o

    >>I know you have different versions of Acronis than I but I never heard from the gent who interceded as a rep from Acronis and still need advice.
I have asked 'chat' to no avail so may I ask your opinion being an Acronis user? When I click on a "one click back up", there is a blue arrow(update) under 'recent backups' and next to the particular back up. I believe it is there to do as its title says, update the image I took before.
Whether 'one click' backups or otherwise, recent backups are listed as they should be.
The question is, "When do you click on the update arrow?"
If I click one click backup every week or so, should I be clicking on it to bring the old up to date more often, or, am I looking for trouble by changing software more often thereby creating more chance of malfunction?
    Thank you, Peter
