I loaded XP Pro on a "OLD" laptop a couple of weeks ago now I have to decide
if I should complete the 30 day actavation or what?

What happens if I don't, Does it start to smoke and then bust into flames,or
does it explode into hundreds of pieces and scatters about the room, Or does
it just die a painless death.

I'd love to know, as to why you want to wait to "activate" on a "OLD" laptop.

Or would Microsoft put a banner across the screen saying "Your a bad boy and were going foreclose on your mortgage and kick you out of your house"

What happened to one of my PCs when i forgot to activate was i lost all the MS software,i still had progs i had installed but no desktop just icons other than that i could still use the web with FF but i am not sure how secure it would be to continue without activation.
I did activate it but had to replace my desktop and that was all. i felt such a dummy as it kept telling me to activat and i was just too lazy.

    Re: Activation of Vista software

You can (legally) use Vista for 120 days without activation. This is NOT a bug in the Vista software, despite how it is portrayed in some links, but a "backdoor" left in by MS.

Check out Vista for 120 days without activation at http://windowssecrets.com/comp/070215/ Scroll down the page for the article.

Do a Google search for Vista for 120 days without activation, for lots more links. I haven't tried it so can't comment further.

Let us know if you try it.

    Hi

No, depending on what Service pack version of XP you're using the effects of not activating are different, but basic is that it prompts you to activate if not then it goes around in circles to the logon screen, although you can boot into safe mode without networking iirc to save your files, but normal mode needs activating past the 30 days grace.

Worst thing with that article Bazza is that its hokum!! Follow on from your link to this one a month later http://www.windowssecrets.com/comp/070315/ then to this retraction two months later http://windowssecrets.com/comp/070705/#intro1 while iirc it did or does work in secific versions they are not retail ones, and likely but not betting my warm slippers on it that method is gone since SP1, half the time folk testing this was in the early days of Vista and many set the clock to different date to test when its the main system time that runs activation as pointed out in the last link.

Just read the WindowsSecrets newsletter again at http://windowssecrets.com/comp/070705/#intro1

Scroll down to the article "Never mind, Vista activation cracks are everywhere", and they state (again?)
    I'm :confused :confused Bazza

I know a supposed profession tech journalist promoting cracks, yes while they are available not need to be flippant because one didn't get the hack right! again a sad fact of listening to hearsay and not really digesting the info presented, massive problem that many journalists/bloggers caused with Vista in not understanding what beta means, which overflowed when it went RTM too late to dispell the bad parts Vista went through as a beta.

Heard it first here Bazza, I predict the same nonsense in Dec 2009 ish!

and on topic-ish part is that no-one has anything to fear from Activation if you have a legit copy of the OS, same for many other applications these days is online activation.
