During my absence when traveling, a house-sitter will be staying at my house. I would like to activate a password on my system as soon as it fires up, obviously, to keep my system secure. I still (!) am using Win 98. I recall long ago that such a password was required to even get into the system but I don't remember how it was deactivated. Now I'd like to make use of it again. Any guidelines will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for your help.

In the "users" window there is a button for setting user passwords, hope this what you are looking for. But the PC can still be fired up and used, the person just wouldnt be able to access the files and programs set up in your user profile.

There is also a boot password, but that is in the BIOS.
I know how to do it on my machine, but, I don't feel qualified to give you those instructions.
If thats what you are looking to do(set a boot password), maybe try asking in "hardware", post your machine specs. and someone here will help.

*a boot password keeps your machine from booting up till the password is entered, effectivly locking your PC completely, rendering it useless.

Thanks....yes, I think the "boot" password is what I'm looking for. It originally was on my machine but was disabled so, of course, I lost the method of retrieving it. I shall ask the question in the hardware section. Many thanks for your advice.
