activating Windows XP

    Hello-
    I have a two year old Gateway which was recently rebuilt. The following pc components were changed due to possible power surge.
    1. power supply
    2. system motherboard
    3. system hard drive

    Our friend reloaded Windows XP, but for some reason now, 30 days laters, we are being asked to activate it and have three days remaining to do such. I have no luck activating it through their 800 number or online. It tells me my number is invalid.

    Please help me work through this! Am I missing anything? If I remove Windows XP and then reload it, will I loose my hard drive info (pictures, documents, etc)?
