PC froze so I pressed Reset. When it started up again the screen has no background, which is the norm. But when I click Restore My Active Desktop nothing happens.
Also when I open control panel no icons appear. It still says 33 Items Displayed at the bottom. I've cleared my cookies and ran CCleaner but no change.
I'm running Windows ME and using Mozilla Firefox. Any ideas?

Sorted the Active desktop. Still the same problem with Control Panel.

for missing control panel icons give this a try....

download Powertoys for XP and install the TweakUI app only, once nstalled open TweakUI and click Control Panel menu and make sure all the control panel icons you want are ticked... then click the Repair Menu and choose "Repair Icons" and hit Repair now.. check to see if they are back .. you may need a reboot tho.

once uncompressed ... goto the folder they uncompressed in and there will be a file named tweakui.inf right click it and choose install ... then if I remember right goto your control panel and you will see TweakUI

Getting somewhere now. When I go to Add/Remove programs it says 34 Objects instead of 33 so I assume Tweakui is installed. Problem is that I still can't see any icons so I can't run it. Help!!!!!!!!!!

Halo. Don't want to be a pest but I can't see the icons in Control Panel. I've done a search for C:\windows\system32 but there is no sign of TweakUI. Obviously I'm doing something wrong. Could you give me a step by step guide on how to fix it?
    Cheers.

hey no probs... try installing it again..

Right click on tweakui.inf > install

then goto control panel and look for the tweakui icon

if not there then do a search for tweakui.cpl ( generally installed in the C:\windows\windows32 folder ) once found double click it

I've found tweakui.inf by searching for the file and have started to use it.
BUT I still have no icons in Control Panel.
    What am I doing wrong?

    Hi Spinnster.
I use AVG and Ad-Aware and have run them both without finding a virus.
Everything else on the PC works fine. It's just these 2 things:
    No icons in Control Panel
No icons in Hotmail (Paste, Copy, etc...)
I'll do a virus scan again and will post back here.

Just ran them both and no virus was detected.

I've just installed Stinger and ran it twice. Nothing.

search for tweakui.cpl as this is the control panel icon/app

after this I dunno apart from looking for another way to rebuild the icons.
